WATCH: The “Blessed Hope” at the Heart of Christmas

In his Christmas message for this year, Diocesan Primate Bishop Daniel reflects on the meaning of Christmas in a world still “wracked by strife and discord.”

Under such circumstances, he asks, where can one find “the wholehearted joy that Christmas used to bring”? Bishop Daniel’s answer is that such joy will not be found in an emotion or mental attitude, but in a person: Jesus Christ. Christ, he says, is the gift that God has given humanity for its salvation, the “blessed hope” to heal a troubled world.

THE CHRISTMAS MESSAGE OF BISHOP DANIEL

My Dear People,

It brings me great joy to greet you during this holy season of Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ, the revelation of God in our world.

I am joyful even though this year, once again, we search to find the happiness that Christmas should bring us: the relentless waves of the pandemic continue to devastate. Our great nation is wracked by strife and discord. Anxiety, depression and violence strike close to home. All of this as our brothers and sisters in Armenia and Artsakh are grieving loss of life, and sacred lands, and they yearn for a secure future for their families.

And so, as we wrap our gifts and adapt our festivities to the dangers that lurk about, we long for the wholehearted joy that Christmas used to bring; the joy that Christmas should bring: the assurance that with the birth of Jesus, Almighty God’s goodness, truth and healing have come into this world.

St. Paul refers to that deep longing as our “Blessed Hope.” The Hope he refers to is not an emotion, not a mental attitude, but a person: Jesus the Son of God Himself.

Writing to his disciple Titus, St. Paul proclaims: “the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all humanity … [and we] await our Blessed Hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” [Titus 2:11, 13].

Christmas is the celebration of a grand paradox: The Savior has “appeared.” But still we “await” Him. As we sing every Sunday in the Holy Badarak, “Christ is revealed amongst us”! But we still “await” Him! God has done his part. Now it is time for you and me to do our part: to turn ever more resolutely to the Lord, day by day: in spirited, constant prayer and worship, in recommitment to our calling as children of God and children of the Armenian Church; in patience and radical care for one another; in stepping outside our own lives and allowing our comfortable ways and convictions to be challenged; by rethinking our customary ways. In a word—a biblical word—by repentance.

Christmas is about God’s gift and our call to action. The Son of God appeared in a troubled world such as ours these days. This reality should bring “Blessed Hope” to all humanity, a gift that people across our world so desperately crave.

I pray that each of you, with your families and loved ones, may reclaim for yourselves “Our Blessed Hope” during these holy days. For peace and stability in our world and for the glory of God.

Our “Blessed” Hope is born and revealed!

Քրիստոս ծնաւ եւ յայտնեցաւ.
Օրհնեալ է յայտնութիւնն Քրիստոսի։

Սիրելի ժողովուրդս,

Մեծ ուրախութիւն է ինծի համար ողջունելու ձեզ այս սուրբ օրերուն երբ կը պատրաստուինք նշելու Ծնունդը Յիսուս Քրիստոսի, յայտնութիւնը Աստուծոյ մեր աշխարհին։

Ես ուրախ եմ, հակառակ անոր, որ այս տարի կրկին կը ջանանք գտնել այն ուրախութիւնը որ Ծննդեան Տօնը մեզ պէտք է բերէ, որովհետեւ համաճարակի ալիքը կը շարունակէ իր աւերը գործել։ Մեր այս հզօր երկիրը ազդուած է տարբեր պայքարներու մրցակցութեամբ ու անհամաձայնութիւններով եւ բախումներով։ Վախի ու կասկածի մտահոգութիւնը եւ յուսալքումն ու տխրութիւնը ինչպէս նաեւ անկարգութիւնը ամէնուրեք է երկրիս մէջ։ Այս ամէնը երբ մեր եղբայրներն ու քոյրերը Հայաստանի ու Արցախի մէջ կ՛ողբան կորուստը կեանքի եւ սրբազան հողերու ու կը ցանկան ապահով ապագայ մը իրենց ընտանիքներուն համար։

Նաեւ, երբ կը փաթթենք մեր նուէրները եւ կը յարմարցնենք մեր տօնախմբութիւնները այն թաքնուած վտանգներուն որոնք կը սպասեն մեր շուրջը, մենք կ՛անսանք այդ խանդավառող ուրախութեան, որ Ծննդեան Տօնը կը բերէր – ուրախութիւն որ Ծնունդը պէտք է բերէ – այն ապահովութիւնը որ Յիսուսի Ծնունդով, Ամենակալ Աստուծոյ բարիքները, ճշմարտութիւնն ու բուժումը եկաւ այս աշխարհին։

Ս. Պօղոս կ՛ակնարկէ այդ խոր կարօտին որպէս «Օրհնեալ Յոյս»։ Յոյսը որուն կ՛ակնարկէ զգացական եւ կամ մտային վերաբերմունք կամ բան մը չէ, այլ անձ է – Յիսուս, Ինքնին Որդին Աստուծոյ։

Գրելով իր աշակերտ Տիտոսին, Ս. Պօղոս կը հռչակէ. «Քանզի Աստուծոյ շնորհքը յայտնուեցաւ իբրեւ փրկութեան միջոց բոլոր մարդոց համար… (եւ մենք) սպասենք Երանելի Յոյսին ու փառքի յայտնութեան մեծն Աստուծոյ եւ մեր Փրկիչ Յիսուս Քրիստոսի»։ /Տիտ. 2:11,13/

Ծնունդը մեծ հանելուկ մըն է։ Փրկիչը «յայտնուեցաւ»։ Բայց մենք տակաւին կը սպասենք Անոր։ Ինչպէս որ մենք ամէն կիրակի կ՛երգենք Պատարագին «Քրիստոս ի մէջ մեր յայտնեցաւ»։ Բայց մենք տակաւին կը սպասենք Անոր։ Աստուած ըրաւ իր բաժինը։ Այժմ ժամանակն է որ դուք եւ ես մեր մասը ընենք, դառնալով Տիրոջ աւելի հաստատօրէն, օր ըստ օրէ, հոգիով, մշտապէս աղօթքով եւ պաշտամունքով, վերստին յանձնառութեամբ որպէս զաւակները Աստուծոյ եւ Հայ Եկեղեցւոյ, համբերութեամբ եւ արտասովոր հոգատարութեամբ իրարու հանդէպ, դուրս ելլելով մեր անձնական կեանքէն եւ թոյլ տալով որ մեր հանգստաւէտ ապրելակերպն ու համոզումները մարտահրաւէրի ենթարկուին եւ մենք վերստին մտածենք մեր սովորական կեանքին մասին։ Մէկ բառով – Աստուածաշնչական բառով մը – ապաշխարելով։

Ծնունդը Աստուծոյ նուէրին մասին է եւ մեր հրաւէրը՝ գործի լծուելու։ Աստուծոյ Որդին յայտնուեցաւ նեղութիւններով լի աշխարհի մը մէջ, ինչպէս որ մեր այսօրուանն է։ Այս իրականութիւնը պէտք է բերէ «Օրհնեալ Յոյս» մը բոլոր մարդկութեան, նուէր մը, որուն բոլոր ժողովուրդները մեր աշխարհի այնքան կարօտ են։

Կ՛աղօթեմ որ իւրաքանչիւրդ ձեր ընտանիքին եւ սիրեցեալներուն հետ կը վերագտնէք ձեզ համար «Մեր Օրհնեալ Յոյսը» այս տօնական օրերուն։ Մեր աշխարհի խաղաղութեան ու կայունութեան եւ Աստուծոյ Փառքին համար։

Մեր «Օրհնեալ» Յոյսը Ծնաւ եւ Յայտնուեցաւ։
Օրհնեալ է Յայտնութիւնն Քրիստոսի։
