“The sainted companions of St. Vartan are not just our history, but represent the sublime presence of the spirit in our lives,” said Catholicos Karekin II in a message honoring the Feast of St. Vartan.
The Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians delivered his message on February 11, 2021, as part of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin’s observance of the unique Armenian Church feast day, which included a special Divine Liturgy at St. Gayane Monastery celebrated by Archbishop Nathan Hovhannisyan.

Dear Beloved Children:
Today, our Holy Apostolic Church commemorates the sacred feast dedicated to St. Vartan the Warrior and His Companions. The sainted companions of St. Vartan are not just our history, but represent the sublime presence of the spirit in our lives.
Nothing inspires our Armenian Christian identity as much as their testimony of faith and patriotic love. In the 5th century, they bravely withstood a terrible trial with the confidence that our people would remain bound to their homeland and to the sacred name of Jesus Christ with eternal love: as “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
Today, the sainted companions of St. Vartan deliver their message to us from the depths of the centuries. They tell us that we must be courageous and productive, strengthened by Christ and with warm feelings of love, in the protection of our sanctities and values. They remind us, as well, of our sacred duty and responsibility of strengthening our homeland, and making it prosper.
Their memory calls us to multiply and unite our efforts on behalf of a vivid future for our people, for our desires, for our martyred children, who fought with the bright and immortal spirit of St. Vartan the Warrior and his companions–and like them were martyred in the Artsakh war.
We pray to the Lord our Savior, that through the intercession of St. Vartan and his companions, h will keep our homeland in peace, our people united in love, strong in hope and faith, under the auspices of his holy right hand. May our hearts rejoice to witness patriotic and national achievements and victories.

Սիրելի զավակներ Մեր,
Այսօր Առաքելական մեր Սուրբ Եկեղեցին նշում է նվիրական հիշատակը Սրբոց Վարդանանց:
Արդարև, Սուրբ Վարդանանք սոսկ պատմություն չեն, այլ ոգու վեհ ներկայություն մեր կյանքում: Հայ քրիստոնեական մեր ինքնությանը ոչինչ այդչափ ոգեշնչում չի պատճառում, որքան հավատքի և հայրենյաց սիրո նրանց վկայությունը: Հինգերորդ դարում նրանք արիությամբ դիմակայեցին ահեղ փորձությանը՝ ունենալով վստահությունը, որ մեր ժողովուրդը առհավետ սիրով կապված պիտի մնա հայրենի իր երկրին և Քրիստոսի Սուրբ Անվանը, քանզի «երկնքի տակ չկա մարդկանց տրված այլ անուն, որով կարելի լինի, որ մենք փրկվենք» (Գործք Դ 12):
Այսօր Սուրբ Վարդանանք դարերի հեռվից պատգամում են մեզ, որ Քրիստոսով զորացած և հայրենյաց սիրո ջերմ զգացումով քաջ ու արդյունավոր լինենք մեր սրբությունների ու արժեքների պաշտպանության և մեր հայրենիքի զորացման ու շենացման սրբազան մեր պարտքի ու պատասխանատվության մեջ:
Նրանց հիշատակը կոչում է, որ բազմապատկենք ու միավորենք մեր ջանքերը՝ հանուն մեր ժողովրդի լուսավոր ապագայի, հանուն մեր իղձերի, հանուն մեր նահատակ զավակների, ովքեր Վարդանանց պայծառ ու անմահ ոգով մարտնչեցին և զոհվեցին Արցախի համար այս պատերազմում:
Հայցում ենք առ Փրկիչ մեր Տերը, որ բարեխոսությամբ Սրբոց Վարդանանց, Իր Սուրբ Աջի հովանու ներքո խաղաղ պահի մեր հայրենիքը, պահպանի մեր ժողովրդին սիրով միասնական, ամուր հույսով ու հավատքով և պարգևի մեր սրտերին հայրենաշեն ու ազգաշեն ձեռքբերումների ու հաղթանակների ուրախություններ:
