On September 21, at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin’s St. Gayane Chapel, His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, led a special prayer service for the Republic of Armenia, on Armenian Independence Day.

Marking the 32nd anniversary of Armenia’s independence referendum, the clergy of Etchmiadzin’s monastic brotherhood as well as a crowd of faithful offered prayers for peace and security for the people of Armenia and Artsakh.

To conclude the service, the Catholicos of All Armenians delivered a special message to the entire Armenian people. Read an English translation and the original Armenian below.

Message of His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians

On Armenian Independence Day: September 21, 2023

Dear Faithful People:

Today we have come together under these sacred arches to offer a united prayer to God for the peace of our dear homeland, Armenia and Artsakh, and the safe life of our people.

As we welcome this 32nd anniversary of independent Armenian statehood, we are in the midst of great anxieties and worries, and the pain of new losses. Our thoughts are directed to our homeland of Artsakh, where after prolonged intimidation, repression, and a total blockade of more than nine months, Azerbaijan has resumed large-scale military operations, continuing its genocidal policy of bloody crimes.

Today, our people in Artsakh are facing a dire, existential threat. A century after the Armenian Genocide, under the eyes of the civilized world, our people are once again tasting the bitterness of genocide. Once again, Armenians pay with their lives and blood to purchase freedom, independence, and national solidarity.

We refuse to believe that the “right of force” continues to operate in the world of the 21st century. We refuse to believe that world leaders cannot find ways to prevent the unfolding disaster in Artsakh. We appeal to the international organizations, to the heads of friendly states, to implement urgent and more effective measures to stop the genocidal actions of Azerbaijan.

We appeal to the authorities of our own country, our national institutions, political and public figures, to make every effort to save Artsakh Armenians from this new plague. The divisiveness in our national life, the destructive indifference, the inability to unite due to social polarization, will only deal new blows to our nation and our native statehood. We need unity to overcome trials and rise again; we need patriotism to ensure the security and strengthening of the state; we need responsibility and an elevated consciousness to protect our national interests and fulfill our cherished dreams.

Beloved and faithful children of Artsakh, today we convey to you our fatherly blessing and prayer, and we express our support to the authorities of Artsakh. You are facing a heavy responsibility and, unfortunately, you bear this cross of suffering alone. But know that our pain and sorrow are held in common; the bitterness and sadness of our losses and the cruel blows inflicted on our native land are in all of our hearts.

At this crucial moment, may God be your help, comfort, and strength in the face of tribulation. Under the Lord’s mercy, may the course of your life and that of your children be safe and secure. In this sorrowful time, let us all follow the example of our ancestors who overcame the storms of history, and find strength, hope, and faith in the words of the Psalmist: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. For thou art with me, Lord: thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4).

Dear people in Armenia, Artsakh, and in the diaspora: Let us raise a prayer to the Heavenly Lord together, asking God to pour His grace of peace on the Armenian world: to keep the Armenian nation strong and firm, and our people’s faith resolute and unshakable.

May the Lord’s love, grace, and peace be with us now and always. Amen.

Սիրելի բարեպաշտ ժողովուրդ,

Այսօր համախմբվել ենք սրբազան այս կամարների ներքո միասնական աղոթք մատուցելու առ Աստված Հայաստան և Արցախ նվիրական մեր հայրենիքի խաղաղության և մեր ժողովրդի անվտանգ կյանքի համար:

Հայոց անկախ պետականության վերակերտման երեսուներկուերորդ տարեդարձը դիմավորում ենք մեծ տագնապների ու անհանգստությունների և նոր կորուստների ցավի մեջ։ Մեր մտքերն ուղղված են հայրենի Արցախ աշխարհին, որտեղ տևական ահաբեկումներից, բռնաճնշումներից և ավելի քան ինը ամիսների ամբողջական շրջափակումից հետո Ադրբեջանը ռազմական լայնածավալ գործողություններ վերսկսեց՝ շարունակելով ցեղասպան իր քաղաքականությունը արյունալի ոճրագործություններով:

Մեր ժողովուրդը Արցախում այսօր կանգնած է գոյաբանական սոսկալի սպառնալիքների առջև: Հարյուր տարի անց քաղաքակիրթ աշխարհի հայացքի ներքո մեր ժողովուրդը վերստին ճաշակում է դառնությունը ցեղասպանության։ Վերստին ազատ ու անկախ կյանքի ու ազգային պատկանելիության համար հայը վճարում է իր կյանքով ու իր արյամբ։

Մենք հրաժարվում ենք հավատալ, որ քսանմեկերորդ դարի աշխարհում շարունակում է գործել ուժի իրավունքը, հրաժարվում ենք հավատալ, որ աշխարհի առաջնորդները չեն կարող միջոցներ գտնել կանխելու համար եղեռնագործությունը Արցախում: Մեր կոչն ենք ուղղում միջազգային կառույցներին, բարեկամ պետությունների ղեկավարներին՝ անհետաձգելի և առավել ազդու միջոցներ գործադրելու Ադրբեջանի ցեղասպան գործողությունները կասեցնելու համար: Կոչ ենք ուղղում մեր երկրի իշխանություններին, ազգային կառույցներին, քաղաքական, հասարակական գործիչներին՝ ամեն ջանք ներդնելու արցախահայությանը նոր պատուհասներից փրկելու համար։ Ազգային մեր կյանքում երկպառակությունը, կործանարար անտարբերությունը, քաղաքական ներհակությունները, հասարակական բևեռացվածության պատճառով համախմբվելու անկարողությունը նորանոր հարվածներ պիտի հասցնեն մեր ազգին և հայրենի պետականությանը։ Մեզ պետք է միաբանություն՝ փորձությունները հաղթահարելու և վերհառնելու համար, անդավաճան հայրենանվիրում՝ պետության անվտանգությունն ապահովելու և հզորանալու համար, պատասխանատվություն ու բարձր գիտակցություն՝ համազգային ու պետական մեր շահերի պաշտպանության և նվիրական իղձերի իրականացման համար։

Արցախի հավատավոր սիրելի զավակներ, Հայրական Մեր օրհնությունն ու աղոթքն ենք բերում ձեզ և Մեր զորակցությունը հայտնում Արցախի իշխանություններին։ Ծանր պատասխանատվության առջև եք կանգնած և, ցավոք, միայնակ եք կրում ձեր տառապանաց խաչը։ Մեր ցավն ու վիշտն ընդհանուր է, մեր կորուստների և հայրենի երկրին հասցված դաժան հարվածների դառնությունն ու տխրությունը ամենքիս սրտերում են։ Վճռական այս պահին թող Աստված ապավեն լինի, մխիթարի ու գոտեպնդի ձեզ՝ դիմակայելու նեղություններին ու դժվարություններին, և Տիրոջ ողորմությամբ ձեր և ձեր զավակների կյանքի ընթացքը լինի անվտանգ ու ապահով։ Այս ծանր իրավիճակում, մեր պատմության փոթորկահույզ ժամանակները հաղթահարած մեր նախնյաց օրինակով, հույսով և հավատով զինվենք ու զորանանք՝ ըստ սաղմոսերգուի խոսքի. «Եթե նույնիսկ անցնեմ մահվան ստվերների միջով, չեմ վախենա չարից, քանզի դու, Տեր, ինձ հետ ես» (Սաղմ. 22.5)։

Սիրելի ժողովուրդ ի Հայաստան, Արցախ և ի սփյուռս, միասնաբար աղոթք բարձրացնենք առ Երկնավոր Տերը՝ հայցելով, որ Բարձրյալն Աստված խաղաղության Իր շնորհները հեղի հայոց աշխարհին, ամուր ու հաստատուն պահի հայոց պետականությունը և ազգասիրության ու հայրենասիրության մեջ՝ վճռական ու անսասան մեր ժողովրդին:

Տիրոջ սերը, շնորհը և խաղաղությունը թող լինեն մեզ հետ այժմ և միշտ. ամեն։
