The annual “Taste of Armenia Festival” of St. James Church, Evanston, IL, will take place on Sunday, Aug. 25, 12-6:30 p.m., in front of the church (located at 816 Clark St., b/n Benson and Sherman Aves.). Enjoy the largest Armenian event in metro Chicago, where crowds of 2,500 come together for a leisurely afternoon of homemade specialties and fellowship. The Gomidas Choir will present “Eternal Glory, Gomidas Vartabed”a concert celebrating the 150th anniversary of the holy father of Armenian musicon Friday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m., in the sanctuary of St. Vartan Cathedral (630 Second Ave., New York). Under the auspices of Diocesan Primate Bishop Daniel, the choir will perform under the direction of Kris Kalfayan, with guest artists Joel Martin and the New Docta String Ensemble. A concert titled “Komitas Vartabed 150,” honoring the anniversary of the composer’s birth, will take place at St. Vartan Cathedral (630 Second Ave., New York City) on Saturday, Sep. 28, at 7:30 p.m. The St. Vartan Cathedral Choir and its soloists—including Anahit Zakaryan, Anoosh Barclay, Hasmik Mekanejian, Solange Merdinian, and Alvard Mayilian—will perform under the direction of Maestro Khoren Mekanejian; Hayk Arsenyan will play piano. Sacred Music Festival Banner

The Eastern Diocese’s “Sacred Music Festival”a three-day celebration of Armenian Church musicwill run Friday to Sunday, October 4-6, at the St. James Church in Evanston, IL. Altar servers and choir members from across the Diocese are encouraged to attend the festival, which will also mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Gomidas Vartabed.

As conceived by the Diocese’s Sacred Music Council, the “Sacred Music Festival” will feature instructional workshops with musical experts, educational seminars, concert performances of liturgical music, and the screening of a documentary on a vanishing aspect of liturgical singing. It is open to choral and instrumental musicians—indeed to all who love Armenian liturgical music, and wish to elevate their understanding and improve their performance.
