On April 9, His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, celebrated a Pontifical Divine Liturgy at St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in Yerevan, on Easter Sunday: the Feast of the Glorious Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In his Easter sermon based on Jesus’ troubling question from the gospel of Luke—“When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” (Luke 18:8)—His Holiness enumerated many of the afflictions plaguing the world in the present day, and affirmed that these troubles can only be challenged, and overcome, through faith in Christ’s resurrection.
“The 21st century was supposed to be an enlightened new era of scientific accomplishment and great technological achievement,” he said. “We were promised that international law would protect human rights, life, and dignity. Yet how many innocent people today are subjected to tribulation and sorrow through the Golgotha of war? How many nations are nailed to the cross? How many souls suffer under injustice, the obsession for power, discrimination, and existential threats?”
The Armenian people have had a bitter experience of these trials, the Catholicos said: “We, too, endured such disastrous realities during a 44-day war, which continues through attacks on the borders of Armenia. In our motherland, it is a daily trial simply to ensure a life of safety and peace in the face of internal and external challenges. Our precious Artsakh has been under siege for a long time, and is facing untold hardship and deprivations.”
Against these earthly afflictions stands a greater reality, embodied in the Easter greeting: “Christ is risen from the dead.” And faith in that reality will sustain individuals, societies, and whole nations in their times of trial. “Faith means victory over trial,” His Holiness said. “It is not characterized by a spirit of fear, despair, or disastrous complacency. However difficult and hopeless the current situation may seem, our faith should be stronger and firmer.”
Throughout the Easter liturgy, assisting Catholicos Karekin II on the altar were Bishop Musheg Babayan and Bishop Vasken Mirzakhanyan. The mammoth cathedral in Yerevan was packed with worshippers, who received Catholicos Karekin’s blessings as he processed through the sanctuary.

“When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” (Luke 18:8)
Dear Faithful People in Armenia, Artsakh, and the Diaspora:
Today, united in the embrace of our churches, we glorify the resurrected Savior and share the good news that “Christ is risen from the dead.” We glorify the miraculous Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, who suffered, was crucified, and rose from the dead in order to free us from the power of sin and death; who through infinite divine love, opened the way to eternity and the kingdom of heaven for humanity with His mission of salvation.
Christ dispelled the darkness of hopelessness, granted people the grace of resurrection, and also strengthened them to rise from the sufferings in this earthly reality, from the disasters and destructions that are raging in a world influenced by Evil. From the crucifixion of Christ to this day, the intrigues of “pharisees,” the betrayals of traitors like Judas, the uncaring judgments like that of Pilate, have not ceased. To the contrary, they have brought disaster into the world, and impoverished the image of God in man.
In the face of such realities, Christ’s words resound with power: “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

In our motherland, it is a daily trial simply to ensure a life of safety and peace in the face of internal and external challenges. Our precious Artsakh has been under siege for a long time, and is facing untold hardship and deprivations.
In the face of such alarming realities, bearing in our hearts the unrelenting pain of our martyred, missing, and injured sons and daughters, we also bear witness to another deplorable situation: namely, new manifestations of enmity and hatred which divide the lives of our people all over the world, undermining national unity.
We see how our age-old sanctified traditions, our system of values—the very pillar of our identity—are being neglected. We see how the national security of our people—especially the spiritual morale which is crucial for overcoming the most serious challenges facing us—is being undermined. Such processes in our lives, especially in the post-war period, aggravate the pain of grief and loss.
And under such circumstances, Christ’s rebukes resound even more strongly for us: “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” (Luke 18:8); “Where is your faith?” (Luke 8:25).
Dear Ones: When Justice and Truth cease to be the core of our activity in public life, we will never escape the injustice of the Pilates of our day. As long as slander and falsehood are spread by the spiteful and vindictive, we will never escape the intrigues of the Pharisees of our time. So long as men deny God, reject the sacred, and devalue the cherished idea of the homeland, then we cannot expect the treasons of our Judases to disappear.
At the same time, when the nation, society, and family are strong and robust, when they are anchored to a God-ordained message and unfading values, then with heavenly support a people will progress to security and prosperity.
Faith means victory over trial. It is not characterized by a spirit of fear, despair, or disastrous complacency. However difficult and hopeless the current situation may seem, our faith should be stronger and firmer. Faith should be expressed in every step and action; in personal, collective, and national realities. Through faith and solidarity we have overcome many affliction of history, rebuilt our independent statehood, and re-launched a creative life on our native land. Today too, faith in God and in our own strength should fortify us to overcome the crises of our present situation, and build a bright future.
Now, let us all as a nation renew our faith with the celebration of the miraculous Resurrection of our Savior. And with our lives, let us proclaim our devotion to Christ through every word and deed, and create a new reality in the resurrection of Christ.
With great faith in the good news that “Christ is risen from the dead,” we extend our fraternal greetings to the hierarchical sees of our Holy Church: to His Holiness Aram I, the Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia; to His Beatitude Archbishop Nourhan Manougian, the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem; to His Beatitude Archbishop Sahak Mashalian, the Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople. With every good wish, we send the soul-stirring good news of the Holy Resurrection to the heads of the sister churches, asking for the support of Almighty God in the fulfillment of our Christ-given mission. We send our pontifical love and blessing to all the clergymen of our holy church, and to our faithful people in the homeland and across the diaspora.
On this bright Easter Sunday, we pray that God will transform the world through the life-renewing grace of Christ’s Resurrection. We ask that He will free mankind from suffering and tribulation, and establish peace on earth. We ask to be strengthened by power of the Resurrection—especially for our sons and daughters of Artsakh, so that they may be brave and unbreakable in spirit, and overcome the trials they face with the strong, indomitable will that is typical of our children in Artsakh. May the risen Savior spread His gifts and mercy on our native land, Armenia and Artsakh, and keep our worldwide people in safety and prosperity, today and always and forever. Amen.

Սիրելի բարեպաշտ ժողովուրդ ի Հայաստան, յԱրցախ և ի սփյուռս,
Այսօր համախմբված մեր եկեղեցիների հարկերի ներքո՝ փառաբանում ենք հարուցյալ Փրկչին՝ ավետելով. «Քրիստոս յարեաւ ի մեռելոց»։ Օրհնաբանում ենք հրաշափառ Հարությունը մեր Տեր Հիսուս Քրիստոսի, Ով չարչարվեց, խաչվեց ու հարություն առավ, որպեսզի մեզ ազատի մեղքի ու մահվան իշխանությունից, Ով աստվածային անսահման սիրով, Իր փրկագործությամբ մարդկության համար բացեց հավիտենության ու երկնքի արքայության ճանապարհը։
Քրիստոս ցրեց անհուսության խավարը, հարության շնորհը պարգևեց մարդկանց, նաև զորացրեց՝ երկրային այս իրականության մեջ հառնելու տառապանքներից, չարի ներգործությամբ աշխարհն ալեկոծող աղետներից ու ավերածություններից։
Քրիստոսի խաչելությունից մինչ օրս փարիսեցիական խարդավանքները, հուդայական մատնությունները, պիղատոսյան դատավարությունները արհավիրքներ են սփռում աշխարհում, աղճատում արարչաստեղծ մարդու կերպարն ու էությունը։ Այսպիսի իրողությունների հանդիման, արդարև, նոր ուժգնությամբ է հնչում Քրիստոսի խոսքը. «Երբ մարդու Որդին գա, արդյոք երկրի վրա հավատ կգտնի՞»։
21-րդ դարը, սիրելի բարեպաշտ ժողովուրդ, լուսավորյալ նոր դարաշրջան պիտի լիներ գիտական ձեռքբերումներով, տեխնոլոգիական մեծ նվաճումներով, մարդու կյանքի, մարդու իրավունքների ու արժանապատվության պաշտպանության միջազգային նորմերով ու օրենքներով։ Բայց որքան անմեղ մարդիկ, որքան ժողովուրդներ են պատերազմների գողգոթաներում նեղությունների ու վշտերի ենթարկվում, տառապանքների խաչին գամվում՝ անարդարության, գերիշխանության մոլուցքի, խտրականության պատճառով, պայքարում գոյաբանական սպառնալիքների դեմ։ Մենք ևս անցանք 44-օրյա պատերազմի, Հայաստանի սահմանների վրա հարձակումների աղետալի իրողությունների միջով։ Մեր հայրենիքը ներքին և արտաքին մտահոգիչ մարտահրավերների պայմաններում դիմակայում է անվտանգ ու խաղաղ կյանքի ապահովման ամենօրյա փորձությունների։ Հարազատ Արցախը տևական ժամանակ շրջափակված է և դիմագրավում է անասելի դժվարությունների ու զրկանքների։ Այս անհանգստացնող, վտանգալի երևույթների հանդիման, մեր սրտերում կրելով չամոքվող վիշտը մեր նահատակ, գերեվարված, անհայտ կորած ու վիրավոր զավակների, ականատես ենք նաև ցավալի այլ իրավիճակի, թե ինչպես են թշնամանքի, ատելության դրսևորումները բաժանարար պատնեշներ դնում աշխարհասփյուռ մեր ժողովրդի կյանքում, խարխլում ազգային միաբանությունը։ Ականատես ենք, թե ինչպես են անտեսվում դարերով նվիրագործված ավանդույթները, մեր ինքնության հիմնասյունը հանդիսացող արժեհամակարգը, խաթարվում մեր ժողովրդի ազգային-հոգևոր անվտանգությունը, որը մեծապես կարևոր է մեր դեմ ծառացած լրջագույն մարտահրավերների հաղթահարման համար։ Մեր կյանքում տեղ գտած նմանօրինակ ընթացքները, հատկապես հետպատերազմյան շրջանում, ավելի են ծանրացնում կրած վշտի ու կորուստների ցավը։ Եվ այսպիսի իրադրության մեջ ամենքիս համար առավել ուժգնությամբ է հնչում Քրիստոսի հարցադրումն ու հանդիմանությունը. «Երբ մարդու Որդին գա, արդյոք երկրի վրա հավատ կգտնի՞» (Ղուկ. 18 8 ), «Ո՞ւր է ձեր հավատը» (Ղուկ. 8.25)։
Հիրավի, երբ պետական և հասարակական կյանքում արդարությունը և ճշմարտությունը դադարում են լինել առանցքը ձեռնարկումների ու իրագործումների, շարունակելու ենք առերեսվել պիղատոսականության դրսևորումների։ Փարիսեցիական խարդավանքները շարունակվելու են, քանի դեռ քինախնդրության և հիշաչարության մղումով սփռվում են զրպարտանք ու անիրավություն։ Հուդայական մատնությունները շարունակվելու են, քանի դեռ չեն դադարում ուրանալ Աստծուն ու սրբությունները, արժեզրկել հայրենիքի նվիրական գաղափարը։ Մինչդեռ պետություն, հասարակություն և ընտանիք ամուր ու զորեղ են, երբ խարսխվում են աստվածադիր պատգամների, անանց արժեքների վրա, որոնք բարօրության ուղենիշ են և առաջնորդում են երկնային զորակցությամբ արդյունավորելու ջանքերը՝ ի խնդիր ժողովրդի ապահովության, առաջընթացի ու բարգավաճման։
Սիրելիներ, հարության հավատքը հաղթանակ է փորձությունների դեմ, որին բնորոշ չէ վախի, հուսահատության, անկումի ոգին, աղետաբեր դատապարտելի հաշտվողականությունը։ Որքան ծանր ու անելանելի թվա ներկա իրավիճակը, այնքան ավելի զորավոր ու հաստատուն պետք է լինի մեր հավատը։ Հավատքը պիտի արտահայտվի յուրաքանչյուր քայլի ու արարքի մեջ՝ անձնական, հավաքական ու համազգային անդաստանում։ Հավատքով ու միաբանությամբ ենք հաղթահարել մեր պատմության ընթացքում բազմաթիվ արհավիրքներ, վերակերտել մեր անկախ պետականությունը և ստեղծագործ կյանք վերընձյուղել հայրենի հողի վրա։ Այսօր էլ Աստծո հանդեպ, մեր ուժերի հանդեպ հավատն է, որ պիտի զորացնի մեզ՝ դուրս գալու ճգնաժամային իրավիճակներից, կառուցելու լուսավոր ապագա։
Արդ, ազգովի վերանորոգենք մեր հավատը մեր Փրկչի հրաշափառ Հարության տոնախմբությամբ և մեր կյանքով, մեր ամեն խոսքով ու գործով վկայենք մեր հավատարմությունը Քրիստոսին, վկայենք մեր նախանձախնդրությունը հանդեպ մեր տերունավանդ հավատքը և կերտենք հարուցյալ նոր իրականություն Քրիստոսի հետ։
Այս մաղթանքով և «Քրիստոս յարեաւ ի մեռելոց» ավետիսով եղբայրական Մեր ողջույնն ենք հղում մեր Սուրբ Եկեղեցու Նվիրապետական Աթոռների գահակալներին՝ Ն.Ս.Օ.Տ.Տ. Արամ Ա Մեծի Տանն Կիլիկիո Կաթողիկոսին, Երուսաղեմի Հայոց Պատրիարք Ամենապատիվ Տ. Նուրհան արքեպիսկոպոս Մանուկյանին, Կոստանդնուպոլսի Հայոց Պատրիարք Ամենապատիվ Տ. Սահակ արքեպիսկոպոս Մաշալյանին։ Ամենայն բարյաց մաղթանքով Սուրբ Հարության հոգեպարար ավետիսն ենք բերում քույր Եկեղեցիների հոգևոր Պետերին՝ հայցելով Ամենակալ Աստծո զորակցությունը Քրիստոսապատվեր առաքելության արդյունավորման գործում։ Հայրապետական Մեր սերն ու օրհնությունն ենք հղում մեր Սուրբ Եկեղեցու ողջ հոգևոր դասին և հավատավոր Մեր ժողովրդին ի հայրենիս և ի սփյուռս։
Սուրբ Հարության այս լուսաշող օրը Մեր աղոթքն ենք վերառաքում առ Բարձրյալն Աստված և խնդրում, որ Քրիստոսի Սուրբ Հարության կենսանորոգ շնորհներով փոխակերպվի ու բարեզարդվի աշխարհը, և մարդկությունը երկնային զորակցությամբ հառնի տառապանքներից ու նեղություններից, հաստատի բարիք ու խաղաղություն։ Հարության զորացնող ուժն ենք հայցում Փրկչից հատկապես Արցախի Մեր զավակների համար, որպեսզի խիզախ ու անկոտրում լինեն ոգով և արցախցուն բնորոշ ամուր և անհողդողդ կամքով հաղթահարեն իրենց առջև ծառացած բոլոր փորձությունները։ Թող հարուցյալ Փրկիչը Իր շնորհներն ու ողորմությունը տարածյալ պահի հայրենի մեր երկրի՝ Հայաստանի ու Արցախի վրա և Իր Սուրբ Աջի հովանու ներքո ապահովության ու բարօրության մեջ պահպանի համայն մեր ժողովրդին ի սփյուռս աշխարհի այսօր և միշտ և հավիտյանս. ամեն։
