His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, delivered a special message on Armenian Christmas, January 6, encouraging the faithful after a solemn year of heartache and loss.
He spoke during the Pontifical Divine Liturgy marking the Feast of the Nativity and Theophany of Christ, at the mammoth St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in Yerevan.

On the Feast of the Holy Nativity and Theophany of Our Lord Jesus Christ
In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light for the fruit of the light is goodness, righteousness, and truth. (Eph 5:8-9)
Dearly Beloved Faithful:
Today, on the Feast of Holy Nativity and Theophany, our Armenian nation—though grieving and heartbroken, but with unshaken faith, unbreakable in will, and unquenchable hope—bows down before the infant Christ, who from the cave of Bethlehem shines as a light and salvation to the entire world. With beautiful words of praise, the soul-stirring canticle conveys to us the wonder of the Holy Nativity: “O Birth-giver of God, tabernacle of light, you became the dawn of the Sun of righteousness and gave light to those of us who sit in darkness.”
The birth of the Savior is an invitation to go from darkness to light—to God—and to be always with the Lord, becoming worthy of heavenly blessings and eternity. Rejecting the Incarnate God, however, brings disaster, spreads evil and destruction. The Holy Nativity is celebrated today by the entire Christian world with a prayer that the life of humanity would be filled with renewal in Christ, and that nations and states can find the ways of peace and harmonious coexistence in the present world full of distress and conflicts.
In the 21st century, our people have again suffered losses, were subjected to new trials, which, unfortunately, we were unable to overcome—due in part to complicated geopolitical realities, but also due to our own deviations from the path of goodness, justice, and truth.
Goodness among us was spoiled by the weeds of malice and treachery. Justice was transformed into nepotism and retribution. Truth was mutilated and distorted by lies and malicious deeds.
Such vices also caused division among our nation, a split in our efforts, and defeat and loss of our sanctuaries and dignified life. In such manner, Artsakh remained alone during the days of disaster. Armenians from Artsakh were forcibly displaced from their homeland and became homeless.
But the Lord, who by His birth brought light into the darkness, shows that with God, every tribulation is transformed into victory, every suffering into divine reward, every difficulty into strength and power—and even death is transformed into eternity. With such realization and commitment, let us unite our efforts to overcome our trials, and reflect the truth of the evangelist’s words in our lives: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (Jn 1:5).
Beloved faithful in the homeland and diaspora: On the feast of the Holy Nativity and Theophany, our Patriarchal message is that we should not turn our hearts into dark and cold caves of despair and sorrow, but rather turn them into mangers, illuminated by the presence of Christ, where the desire to offer God-pleasing gifts to the Infant Jesus reigns supreme. Now, let us rely on the Divine Lord who became human; let us stay strong in faith, be pioneers of goodness, love and truth everywhere, for the sake of our righteous and bright life. Let us be zealous for the strengthening of our state, and draw tightly together to stop with all our strength Azerbaijan’s expansionist ambitions and encroachments. Let us eliminate artificially created gaps between us; let us live with love for each other, so that the vineyards of our nation and homeland will be brightened with heavenly blessing, as it is said in the Scriptures: “The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned” (Is 9:2; Mt 4:16).
Inspired by the hopeful mystery of the Holy Nativity and Theophany, we bring our Patriarchal encouragement to our people displaced from Artsakh. Dearly beloved: You have overcome—and are now overcoming, with unparalleled heroism spirit, and dignity—the hardships that afflicted you. Artsakh will never become a past for us. We will continue to cherish it in our hearts and souls, making every effort to protect the rights of Artsakh Armenians.
Stay full of hope. God will provide for you, and give blessings for the hardships you have endured. You are not alone in your difficulties. Your faithful brothers and sisters in our country and in the diaspora are with you, who will continue to support and help you by all possible means. Together we will get out of the difficult situation and build a peaceful, prosperous, and safe future for our people and homeland.
We believe in the dawn of our new life, because darkness cannot be a barrier to the sunrise. With the light of the morning, the luminous Light of God shall shine in our souls as the canticle of St. Nerses the Graceful entreats. And as the Lord says through the prophet: “My righteousness draws near speedily, my salvation shall rise as light” (Is 51:5).
With such abundance of hope and faith, with the good tidings of the Holy Nativity, we bring our fraternal greetings to the incumbents of the Hierarchical Sees of our Holy Church: to His Holiness Aram I, the Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia; to the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Archbishop Nourhan Manoukian; to the Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople, His Beatitude Archbishop Sahak Mashalian. To the heads of our sister churches, we ask for the Savior to bless and support with fruitful years their pastoral ministries. We convey our Patriarchal love and kind wishes to the clergy of our Holy Church and to all our faithful people.
On this blessed day of the Holy Nativity, we raise our voices in prayer to our Savior, Christ the Lord:
O Jesus Christ, Son of God: You became incarnate for our salvation and came into the world with your infinite love for humanity. You have brought the light of heavenly grace into the souls of all who believe in you. Give peace and prosperity to the world and to our motherland. Free us from all evil and ill, grant comfort to our hearts troubled and saddened by the horrors of war and heavy loss. Pardon us and grant us forgiveness, so that sins and failures do not block the way for us to realize our dreams and the sources of your infinite goodness and inexhaustible mercy. Protect our brave soldiers guarding the borders of the motherland with your holy Hand. Promptly bring back the captured Armenians who are being held hostage, as well as to our missing ones. Grant heavenly rest and brightness to our heroic martyrs who died in the war.
Let your bright presence shine among all Armenians, as in the Christmas manger, so that with you we can face all trials with strength, and move towards the victorious future of our people, glorifying you with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and always and forever.

Մեր Տեր Հիսուս Քրիստոսի Սուրբ Ծննդյան Եւ Աստվածահայտնության Տոնի Առիթով
Յանուն Հօր եւ Որդւոյ եւ Հոգւոյն Սրբոյ. ամէն։
«Հիմա լոյս էք ի Տէր. ընթացէք ինչպէս լուսոյ որդիներ. քանզի լուսոյ պտուղներն են բարութիւնը, արդարութիւնը եւ ճշմարտութիւնը» (Եփ. 5.8-9):
Սիրելի հավատավոր ժողովուրդ,
Այսօր՝ Սուրբ Ծննդյան և Աստվածահայտնության տոնին, ազգս հայոց, թեև վշտակիր և հոգեխռով, սակայն հավատքով աներեր, կամքով անկոտրում և հույսով առլեցուն, խոնարհվում է մանկացյալ Փրկչի առջև, որ բեթղեհեմյան այրից որպես լույս ու փրկություն ճառագեց ողջ աշխարհին։ Գեղեցիկ օրհներգությամբ է հոգեպարար շարականը մեզ փոխանցում Սուրբ Ծննդյան հիասքանչ իրողությունը. «Աստվածածին, լույսի խորան, արդարության Արեգակի արևելք եղար և խավարի մեջ նստածներիս լույս ծագեցրիր»։ Փրկչի Ծնունդը հրավեր է խավարից դեպի լույս, դեպի Աստված ընթանալու և միշտ Տիրոջ հետ լինելով՝ արժանի դառնալու երկնատուր բարիքների ու հավիտենության։ Մարդեղացյալ Աստվածորդուն մերժելը, սակայն, արհավիրքներ է բերում, չարիք ու ավեր սփռում։ Սուրբ Ծնունդը այսօր քրիստոնյա ողջ աշխարհը տոնում է աղոթքով ու հայցով, որ մարդկության կյանքը լցվի Քրիստոսով նորոգությամբ, և ազգեր ու պետություններ կարողանան գտնել խաղաղության ու համերաշխ համակեցության ուղիները տագնապներով ու հակամարտություններով լեցուն ներկա աշխարհում։
Մեր ժողովուրդը 21-րդ դարում վերստին կրեց կորուստներ, ենթարկվեց նոր փորձությունների, որոնք, ցավոք, անկարող եղանք հաղթահարելու աշխարհաքաղաքական բարդ իրադարձությունների, ինչպես նաև առաքելապատվեր բարության, արդարության ու ճշմարտության ճանապարհից խոտորվելու պատճառով։ Բարությունը մեզանում աղճատվեց չարության ու նենգության որոմներով, արդարությունն այլափոխվեց կողմնակալության ու հաշվեհարդարի դրսևորումներով, ճշմարտությունը խեղվեց ու խաթարվեց ստով ու չարահնար գործողություններով։ Նման արատները նաև պատճառ դարձան մեր ազգի մասնատման, ուժերի ջլատման ու պարտությունների, նաև կորուստների մեր սրբությունների և արժանապատվության։ Այսպես Արցախը միայնակ մնաց իրեն պատած արհավիրքների օրերին։ Արցախցի հայորդիք եղան հալածական հայրենի բնօրրանից, աստանդական և անօթևան։ Բայց Տերը, Ով Իր Ծննդյամբ փրկություն ու լույս բերեց խավարի մեջ, ցույց է տալիս, որ Աստծո հետ՝ ամեն նեղություն վերափոխվում է հաղթության, ամեն տառապանք՝ աստվածային հատուցման, ամեն դժվարություն՝ ուժի և զորության, և անգամ մահը՝ հավիտենության։ Այս գիտակցությամբ ու հանձնառությամբ մեկտեղենք մեր ջանքերը փորձությունները հաղթահարելու համար և ավետարանչի խոսքերի ճշմարտությունը ցոլացնենք մեր կյանքում. «Եվ լույսը խավարի մեջ լուսավորում է, և խավարը նրան չնվաճեց» (Հովհ. 1.5):
Սիրելի բարեպաշտ զավակներ ի հայրենիս և ի սփյուռս, Սուրբ Ծննդյան և Աստվածահայտնության տոնին Հայրապետիս պատգամն է, որ մեր սրտերը չդարձնենք հուսահատության, տրտմության մութ ու ցուրտ անձավներ, այլ Քրիստոսի ներկայությամբ լուսավորված մսուրներ, որտեղ մանուկ Հիսուսին աստվածահաճո գործեր ընծայելու մղումն ու ձգտումն են թագավորում։ Արդ, ապավինենք մարդեղացյալ Տիրոջը, ամուր մնանք հավատքի մեջ, ամենուր լինենք բարու, սիրո և ճշմարտի առաջամարտիկներ՝ հանուն արդար ու լուսավոր մեր կյանքի։ Նախանձախնդիր լինենք հայրենի պետության հզորացմանը և համախմբվենք միասին՝ մեր ողջ ներուժով կասեցնելու համար Ադրբեջանի ծավալապաշտական նկրտումներն ու ոտնձգությունները։ Վերացնենք արհեստականորեն մեր մեջ ստեղծված անջրպետները, ապրենք միմյանց հանդեպ սիրով, որ երկնային օրհնությամբ պայծառանան հայրենական ու ազգային մեր անդաստանները, ինչպես Ավետարանում է ասվում. «Խավարի մեջ նստած ժողովուրդը մեծ լույս տեսավ. և լույս ծագեց նրանց վրա, որ նստում էին մահվան երկրի և ստվերների մեջ» (Մատթ. 4.16)։
Սուրբ Ծննդյան և Աստվածահայտնության հուսաբեր խորհրդով քաջալեր՝ Հայրապետական Մեր հորդորն ենք բերում Արցախից տեղահանված Մեր զավակներին։ Սիրելիներ, դուք անօրինակ հերոսական և անընկճելի ոգով ամենայն արժանապատվությամբ և անտրտունջ հաղթահարել և հաղթահարում եք ձեզ պատուհասած նեղությունները։ Մեզ համար երբեք անցյալ չի դառնալու Արցախը, որը մենք շարունակելու ենք փայփայել մեր սրտում ու հոգում՝ ամենայն ջանք ի գործ դնելով արցախահայության իրավունքների պաշտպանության համար։ Մնացեք լի հույսով՝ Աստված ձեզ բարիքներ և օրհնություններ պիտի պարգևի ձեր կրած զրկանքների փոխարեն։ Ձեր դժվարություններում դուք միայնակ չեք։ Ձեզ հետ են ի հայրենիս և ի սփյուռս հավատավոր ձեր եղբայրներն ու քույրերը, ովքեր պիտի շարունակեն բոլոր հնարավոր միջոցներով սատար ու օգնական լինել ձեզ։ Միասին մենք դուրս պիտի գանք առկա ծանր իրավիճակից և կառուցենք խաղաղ, բարօր ու ապահով ապագան մեր ժողովրդի ու հայրենիքի։ Հավատում ենք մեր նոր կյանքի արշալույսին, քանզի խավարը չի կարող արգելք լինել արևածագին։ Առավոտվա լույսի հետ, Սուրբ Ներսես Շնորհալի Հայրապետի հայցի համաձայն, մեր հոգիներում պիտի պայծառանա Աստծո իմանալի լույսը, և ինչպես Տերն է ասում մարգարեի շուրթերով՝ «Արագ պիտի մոտենա Իմ արդարությունը, և Իմ փրկությունը պիտի ելնի ինչպես լույս» (Եսայի 51.5):
Այս հուսառատությամբ ու հավատով, Սուրբ Ծննդյան ավետիսով եղբայրական Մեր ողջույնն ենք բերում մեր Սուրբ Եկեղեցու Նվիրապետական Աթոռների գահակալներին՝ Ն.Ս.Օ.Տ.Տ. Արամ Ա Մեծի Տանն Կիլիկիո Կաթողիկոսին, Երուսաղեմի Հայոց Պատրիարք Ամենապատիվ Տ. Նուրհան արքեպիսկոպոս Մանուկյանին, Կոստանդնուպոլսի Հայոց Պատրիարք Ամենապատիվ Տ. Սահակ արքեպիսկոպոս Մաշալյանին, քույր Եկեղեցիների հոգևոր Պետերին՝ հայցելով Փրկչի օրհնությունն ու զորակցությունը և գահակալության արևշատ ու արդյունալի տարիներ։ Հայրապետական Մեր սերն ու բարյաց մաղթանքներն ենք հղում մեր Սուրբ Եկեղեցու հոգևոր դասին և համայն հավատավոր Մեր ժողովրդին։
Սուրբ Ծննդյան շնորհաբեր այս օրը Մեր աղոթքն ենք վերառաքում առ Փրկիչ մեր Տերը։ Ով մանկացյալ Հիսուս Քրիստոս, Որդի Աստծո, մեր փրկության համար մարմնացար և աշխարհ եկար ու մարդկության հանդեպ անսահման սիրովդ երկնառաք շնորհների լույսը ծագեցրիր բոլոր Քեզ հավատացողների հոգիներում։ Խաղաղություն ու բարօրություն պարգևիր աշխարհին ու մեր հայրենիքին։ Ազատիր մեզ ամենայն չարից ու չարիքից, մխիթարություն շնորհիր պատերազմի արհավիրքներից ու ծանր կորուստներից խռովահույզ ու վշտակիր մեր սրտերին։ Ներիր և թողություն շնորհիր մեզ, որպեսզի մեղքերն ու անկումները չփակեն մեր առջև ճանապարհը մեր տեսիլքների իրագործման և ակունքները Քո անբավ բարիքների և անսպառ ողորմության։ Սուրբ Աջիդ խնամքի ներքո պահպանիր հայրենիքի սահմանները հսկող մեր քաջարի զինվորներին։ Շուտափույթ վերադարձ պարգևիր պատանդ պահվող գերյալ հայորդիներին, այլև անհայտ կորած մեր զավակներին։ Երկնային երանական հանգստության և լուսեղեն օթևանների արժանացրու պատերազմում զոհված մեր հերոս նահատակներին։ Թող համայն հայության մեջ, ինչպես Սուրբ Ծննդյան մսուրում, շողարձակի Քո լուսավոր ներկայությունը, որպեսզի Քեզանով զորացյալ դիմակայենք բոլոր փորձություններին և ընթանանք դեպի հաղթական գալիքը մեր ժողովրդի՝ փառավորելով Քեզ Հոր և Սուրբ Հոգու հետ այժմ և միշտ և հավիտյանս. ամեն։
