With the deepest sorrow, the entire Eastern Diocese mourns the passing of Maestro Khoren Mekanejian: composer, conductor, and director of Music Ministry in the Diocese for three decades.
As Director of the St. Vartan Cathedral Choir, Maestro Khoren set the standard for interpreting the sacred music of the Armenian Church: a standard recognized and imitated around the world.
With his masterful setting of the Armenian Divine Liturgy–written at the behest of His Holiness Vasken I, the late 130th Catholicos of All Armenians–Maestro Khoren entered the rarified company of those few spiritual artists who have left a lasting impression on the Armenian Church. Last year marked the 40th anniversary of its composition; but the “Khorenian Badarak” is surely a precious gift for the ages, which will be inspiring hearts and lifting spirits of the faithful for generations to come.
To the people of our Diocese, Khoren Mekanejian’s larger-than-life personal presence, which radiated joy to all around him, will be dearly missed. His infectious enthusiasm for Armenian sacred music, his masterful skill as a teacher, and his ability to convey the depths of emotion through music, have all enriched the lives of children and adults, choir singers and listeners, throughout the Armenian Church.

The funeral arrangements are as follows:
Visitation hours will be held at St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral (630 Second Avenue, New York City), on Sunday, May 4, from 6 to 9 p.m., with the dahn gark (wake) service at 7 p.m.
The funeral service will also be at St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral, on Monday, May 5, at 10 a.m. Diocesan Primate Bishop Mesrop Parsamyan will preside and deliver the eulogy.
The funeral will be followed by a burial service at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Flushing, Queens. The family has asked that donations in Maestro Khoren Mekanejian’s memory be made to the St. Vartan Cathedral Renovation Project.
In the meantime, the Eastern Diocese, its Primate Bishop Mesrop Parsamyan, clergy, staff, and faithful, offer our sincere sympathies to Maestro’s loved ones: to his dear wife Flora; their son Hagop, daughter Hasmik and son-in-law Manouel; grandchildren Ani and Levon, and the extended Mekanejian and Rakoubian families. And we offer prayers of hope for our departed teacher, colleague, and friend.
May our risen Lord Jesus shine His Holy Light on the spirit of His devoted, beloved servant, Khoren Mekanejian, and grant him peace in God’s eternal kingdom.

In Memoriam: Maestro Khoren Mekanejian (1937-2025)
Khoren Mekanejian was born in 1937 in Aleppo, Syria. He entered the seminary of Holy Etchmiadzin in Armenia, and pursued studies there from 1956 to 1960 in the theology of the Armenian Church, as well as in philosophy, humanities, and psychology. During his years at Holy Etchmiadzin, Khoren’s musical studies included music theory, polyphony, and harmony under the private tutelage of Dr. Robert Atayan, the renowned master of Armenian sacred music and specialist in the music of Gomidas Vartabed.
Following the completion of his studies at Holy Etchmiadzin, Khoren matriculated at the Gomidas Conservatory in Yerevan, where he became a student of Tatoul Altounian. In 1965 he received a master’s degree in musical conducting and choral singing. Prior to receiving this degree, Khoren enjoyed the privilege of being second conductor for the State Academic Choir of Armenia, which was then directed by Hovannes Chekijian. He returned to the Gomidas Conservatory from 1975 to 1979, where he received another master’s degree in symphonic studies.
Maestro Khoren’s three-year task of composing the choral and organ accompaniment to his original setting of the Armenian Divine Liturgy was crowned, after one year of trial use at the Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin, with the official approval His Holiness Vasken I, the 130th Catholicos of All Armenians, in an encyclical dated October 20, 1984. The “Khorenian” liturgical setting is now in use in churches throughout the world. Maestro Khoren also created other liturgical hymns and published articles on musical methodology. The central government in Moscow conferred the title of “professor of music par excellence” on Maestro Khoren in 1991.
In the early 1990s, Khoren Mekanejian settled in America, at the behest of then-Diocesan Primate Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, to serve as director of the Music Ministry department at the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America in New York City, where he also directed the St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral Choir. Professor Mekanejian’s lifelong mission was to teach the authoritative interpretation of the chants and hymns of the holy badarak to choir members, lay faithful, and children throughout the Diocese.
Maestro Khoren was also very active as a composer during these years, with his compositions including a choral piece honoring the centennial of the Diocese (1998); a song about the holy city of Jerusalem and his Christmas Oratorio (2000), both dedicated to the 2,000th anniversary of Christ’s nativity; and a composition honoring the 1700th anniversary of Armenia’s conversion to Christianity (2001).
During his years at the Diocese, Khoren served under three Diocesan Primates: Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Bishop Daniel Findikyan, and Bishop Mesrop Parsamyan. And he received the blessings and admiration of three Catholicoi of All Armenians: His Holiness Vasken I, of blessed memory; His Holiness Karekin I, of blessed memory; and His Holiness Karekin II. Khoren was honored to serve these reverend church leaders, and was honored by them in turn.
In 1997, on the occasion of the Maestro’s 60th birthday, His Holiness Karekin I, the 131st Catholicos of All Armenians, awarded Maestro Khoren the prestigious “St. Sahag and St. Mesrob Medal” and pontifical encyclical, in recognition of his lifelong dedication and invaluable service to the Armenian Church. Subsequent decades have seen numerous awards bestowed, and milestones honored. In 2016, he accomplished the long-held dream of recording the Khorenian Badarak in its entirety, rehearsing and conducting a choir in Armenia for this purpose. The result was released on compact disc for posterity.
Throughout the first quarter of the 21st century, Khoren Mekanejian’s influence and artistry were a part of every major liturgical event in the Eastern Diocese. In 2015, Maestro Khoren conducted the enormous choir of singers from Armenian churches across the country, during the Pontifical Divine Liturgy commemorating the 100th year of remembrance of the Armenian Genocide, at the National Catholic Shrine in Washington, DC, before a congregation of thousands of Armenian Church faithful. The year 2024 saw St. Vartan Cathedral honor the 40th anniversary of the Khorenian Divine Liturgy with a stellar concert in the cathedral sanctuary.
In the intervening years, Maestro Khoren shared his musical gifts with school-age children at the Diocesan camps, seminarians at St. Nersess Seminary, and of course through his weekly conducting of the St. Vartan Cathedral Choir. It was during the cathedral’s April 20, 2025 Easter service that Maestro conducted that choir for the last time–a little more than a week before answering the final call of the Lord he had devotedly served for nine decades.
Maestro Khoren’s lifetime achievement was to bring the legacy of Armenian music to a wider audience, to a new generation—and most of all, to bring it into our hearts. We were all graced by his magnificent talent, and our entire Diocese was enriched by his loving knowledge of Armenian sacred music, and his reverence towards God.
May God enlighten Maestro Khoren’s spirit. Asdvadz hokeen lousavoreh.

Մաէսթրոյ Խորէն Մեքանեճեանի Յիշատակին (1937–2025)
Ամերիկայի Միացեալ Նահանգներու Արեւելեան Թեմը՝ Տէր Յիսուսի Յարութեան յոյսով կը սգայ կորուստը երկար տարիներու Սբ. Վարդան Մայր Եկեղեցիին Դպրապետ Երաժիշտ Խորէն Մեքանեճեանի: Ապրիլ 30-ի լուսաբացին հասաւ վաստակաշատ երաժիշտին մահուան գոյժը, որ թէեւ գրեթէ իննսունամեայ, բայց տակաւին տաս օրեր առաջ ղեկավարած էր մայր եկեղեցւոյ դպրաց դասը՝ Սբ. Զատկուայ եպիսկոպոսական պատարագին տալով ակնկալուած շուքն ու պերճանքը:
Խորէն Մեքանեճեան ծնած է 1937-ին, Հալէպ, Սուրիա: Համաշխարհային Երկրորդ Պատերազմի աւարտին՝ հայրենադարձներու կարավանով ընտանիքը հաստատուեցաւ Հայաստան, եւ Խորէն 1956-ին ընդունուեցաւ Սուրբ Էջմիածնի Ընծայարան, եւ յաճախեց Գէորգեան Ճեմարանի ընթացքը մինչեւ 1960: Այդտեղ կազմուեցաւ անոր երաժշտական տաղանդը՝ մեծանուն երաժշտագէտ Ռոպէր Աթայանի խնամքին տակ: Կոմիտասի անուան Երաժշտանոցին մէջ՝ Խորէն շարունակեց իր բարձրագոյն ուսումը եւ 1965-ին պսակուեցաւ որպէս խմբավար Թաթուլ Ալթունեանի դասապետութեան տակ, եւ ձեռնհասօրէն կատարեց Հայաստանի Պետական Երգչախումբին խմբավարութիւնը որպէս տեղակալ Յովհաննէս Չեքիճեանի: Միշտ կատարելագործելով իր երաժշտական պատրաստութիւնը՝ Մաէսթրոն խորացաւ համերգային գիտութեան մէջ 1975–1979 տարիներուն:
Երեք տարիներու ստեղծագործական աշխատանքի պտուղը եղաւ “Խորէնեան” Պատարագը, զոր պաշտօնապէս վաւերացուց երջանկայիշատակ Վազգէն Ա Ամենայն Հայոց Վեհափառ Կաթողիկոսը՝ հոկտեմբեր 20, 1984-ին հայրապետական կոնդակով, դասելով զայն հայ Եկեղեցւոյ ծիսական երաժշտութեան գաՆձարանին մէջ:
Մաէսթրոն 1993-ին ընտանեօք գաղթեց դէպի Ամերիկայի Միացեալ Նահանգներ, եւ Հայաստանեայց Եկեղեցւոյ Արեւելեան Թեմին Առաջնորդ՝ Խաժակ Արք. Պարսամեանի հրաւէրով ստանձնեց Սբ. Վարդան մայր տաճարին դպրապետութիւնը: Մաէսթրոն իր կեանքի կոչումը դրած էր հայ եկեղեցական երաժշտութեան հարազատ մեկնութիւնը աւանդելուն մէջ յաջորդ սերունդին, դասաւանդելով թեմական ճամբարներուն մէջ մանուկներու, ինչպէս նաեւ Սբ. Ներսէս Ընծայարանին մէջ՝ մեծահասակներու:
Միաժամանակ ան երբեք չկորսնցուց ստեղծագործելու ներշնչումն ու կորովը, եւ հեղինակեց բարձրարուեստ կտորներ՝ ինչպէս Ամերիկայի Միացեալ Նահանգներու Թեմին հիմնարկութեան հարիւրամեակին (1998), Սուրբ Ծնունդի Աղօթական Երգը՝ քրիստոնէութեան երկհազարամեակին, կամ Հայոց քրիստոնէութեան դարձին նուիրուած կտորը՝ 1700-ամեակին առիթներով:
Մաէսթրոյին վաստակը ըստ արժանւոյն գնահատուեցաւ բազմիցս: Անոր վաթսուներորդ տարեդարձին՝ Նորին Սրբութիւն Գարեգին Ա Ամենայն Հայոց Վեհափառ Կաթողիկոսը հայրապետական կոնդակով “Սբ. Սահակ եւ Սբ. Մեսրոպ” շքանշանը պարգեւեց վաստակաւոր Մաէսթրոյին: Իսկ 2024-ին Սբ. Վարդան մայր տաճարին մէջ շքեղ համերգով յիշատակուեցաւ Խորէնեան Պատարագին ստեղծագործութեան 40-ամեակը:
Երախտագիտութեան խոր զգացումներով պիտի ապրի Մաէսթրոն մեր հոգիներուն մէջ, եւ անոր նուիրական առաքելութիւնը՝ վառ պահելու եւ աճեցնելու հայ հոգեւոր երաժշտութիւնը՝ միշտ յուզումով պիտի հնչէ մեր սրտերուն մէջ իր հեղինակած եղանակներով:
