In a splendid Easter liturgy on Sunday, April 17, His Holiness Karekin II told how Christ’s resurrection gives hope to a world troubled by war, division, and instability.
The Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians offered these thoughts as he celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the mammoth St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in Yerevan, Armenia, before a large crowd of worshippers and dignitaries from Armenia and the diaspora.
“The Feast of the Resurrection of Christ is a feast of infinite love for man: God’s victory over sin and death,” said Catholicos Karekin II in his sermon. “The Savior’s love was met with hatred and enmity—but the Lord never hesitated or resented it. His concern for mankind was rejected, His truth was rebuffed by falsehood; but Christ fulfilled His mission for the salvation of mankind by ‘being resurrected and reconciled to the God of the world.'”
Central to his message was a plea for peace. He prayed “that peace will prevail all over the world, especially in the lives of the brotherly peoples of the Russian Federation and Ukraine.” And he spoke at length about the need for internal and external peace in the Armenian homeland.
In a poignant section of the sermon, the Catholicos spoke directly to the Armenians of Artsakh. “We know well your heroic spirit, your courage and determination in the face of trials,” he said. “We are sure that you will not be disheartened in the face of difficulties, you will rebuild your native cradle, keeping alive, with hope, the faith in God that humanity and justice will prevail, that the bright morning will dawn when Artsakh’s right to live freely and independently will be recognized.”

“The nations of men rejoiced, when they heard the news of your resurrection!”

Dear Faithful Children:
On the miraculous feast of the Holy Resurrection, the whole Christian world glorifies the risen Savior, who was crucified and resurrected for the atonement of human sin—giving mankind the power to rise above suffering, and the grace to inherit eternal life. The scattered apostles were united by the Resurrection of the Lord.
Today, we, the faithful children of our nation, feel the blessed presence of the Lord in our united churches. Like the apostles gathered in the Upper Room, see the empty grave with the anointed women, hear the angelic proclamation of the Resurrection: “He is not here, but is risen.”
The Feast of the Resurrection of Christ is a feast of infinite love for man: God’s victory over sin and death. The Savior’s love was met with hatred and enmity—but the Lord never hesitated or resented it. His concern for mankind was rejected, His truth was rebuffed by falsehood; but Christ fulfilled His mission for the salvation of mankind by “being resurrected and reconciled to the God of the world.” In the Resurrection, love prevails over all, at last. By the saving grace of the resurrection, believers are strengthened and become worthy of eternal life. The resurrection brings life to souls burdened with sin, keeps humanity on the steady path of hope, love, and justice.
In the course of subsequent centuries lit by the redemption of Christ, the miracle of the resurrection were conferred onto individuals and peoples: girded about by plagues and trials, yet empowered to overcome crucifixion, rise from Golgotha, and walk victoriously to resurrected life. Inspired by this truth, St. Nerses Shnorhali blesses the miraculous Resurrection of the Lord, saying: “The nations of men rejoiced, when they heard the news of your resurrection.”
Dear pious believers: Today the life of mankind is turbulent with divisions, contradictions, and destructive ethnic hatreds. We see danger in political developments that lead to serious international, economic, and social problems, disrupting the harmonious co-existence of countries and peoples. Let us pray that the spirit of mutual understanding and solidarity will be stronger among the people; that peace will prevail all over the world, especially in the lives of the brotherly peoples of the Russian Federation and Ukraine. Under God’s direction, let all difficult and distressing situations in mankind be resolved as soon as possible, to keep the world from new disasters. Our Lord still offers humanity the message of peace and brotherhood, the call to live in godliness and humanity. Only in the resurrection can we live a new life, by living in accordance with Christ’s commandments, so that, “just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life” (Rom 6:4).
Dear pious believers: The gospel of the Holy Resurrection today brings special consolation and consolation to all our people—especially to our brothers and sisters who have lived through the horrors of war, who are still in sorrow, tribulation, unstable peace and insecurity. In these difficult times, our life needs a work of faith, in order to be embellished with new accomplishments and patriotic achievements in the joy of eternal resurrection. The resurrected life in our national family means common sense, regardless of political views and disagreements; loyalty to the homeland; unconditional devotion to the nation. In this spirit, we must expel from our lives indifference and intolerance, and ensure power, unity, and progress for our people all over the world, and build a prosperous future for generations to come.
Today, we are all concerned about the security of our country: our statehood, external challenges, and internal political concerns and tensions. We are concerned about the difficult situation of the sacred relic of our homeland, Artsakh, against which provocations and encroachments are still going on.
Dear citizens of Artsakh: We know well your heroic spirit, your courage and determination in the face of trials. We are sure that you will not be disheartened in the face of difficulties, you will rebuild your native cradle, keeping alive, with hope, the faith in God that humanity and justice will prevail, that the bright morning will dawn when Artsakh’s right to live freely and independently will be recognized.
Dear pious people: Let us all be “comrades-in-arms” to our homeland Armenia and Artsakh, which is going through such hardship. Let us support our compatriots in need, with the hope of a resurrected life. Let us make our cherished country a living testimony to the miracle of the resurrection. My fatherly prayer to the risen Lord is for the Armenian nation to realize the reward of its sufferings, in the rebirth of its sacred homeland.
Uttering this prayer from our lips with the gospel message, “Christ is risen from the dead,” we bring our greetings to the enthroned hierarchs of our holy church: His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia; His Beatitude Archbishop Nourhan Manoogian, Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem; His Beatitude Archbishop Sahak Mashalian, Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople; and to the leaders of our dioceses. We ask the risen Savior to bestow His heavenly blessing on them all, and give them fruitful and productive years. We send our patriarchal love and best wishes to our entire church, and its faithful people in the homeland and diaspora.
On this bright Easter morning, we raise our prayers to God, asking that our Savior, Jesus Christ, pour His Grace of Resurrection into the lives of mankind. Lord, preserve our homeland, and keep your people around the world under your Holy Right Hand, providing peace, prosperity, and security. May my nation, strengthened by the life-giving mystery of the Resurrection, realize the cherished dreams of the ancestors of the Armenian nation, for the glory and eternal enlightenment of our country and people. May the love, care and mercy of the Lord be the protection of my nation and homeland—now and forever. Amen.

Սիրելի հավատավոր զավակներ,
Սուրբ Հարության հրաշափառ տոնին քրիստոնյա ողջ աշխարհը վերստին փառաբանում է հարուցյալՓրկչին, Ով խաչվեց և հարություն առավ մարդկանց մեղքերի քավության համար՝ մարդկությանըպարգևելով չարչարանքներից վեր հառնելու ուժը և հավիտենական կյանքը ժառանգելու շնորհը։ ՏիրոջՀարությամբ համախմբվեցին հուսալքված ու շփոթահար առաքյալները և Հարության բերկրությունն ումխիթարությունը իրենց սրտում՝ Քրիստոսի կենարար վարդապետությունը տարածեցին աշխարհում ևտերունապատվեր սիրո պատգամը հաստատեցին հավատացյալների հոգիներում։
Այսօր մենք և ազգիս աշխարհասփյուռ հավատավոր զավակները համախմբված եկեղեցիներում՝Վերնատանը հավաքված առաքյալների պես զգում ենք Տիրոջ օրհնաբեր ներկայությունը, յուղաբերկանանց հետ տեսնում թափուր գերեզմանը, լսում Հարության հրեշտակաձայն ավետիսը. «Այստեղ չէ, այլ հարություն առավ»։
Քրիստոսի Հարության տոնը մարդու հանդեպ աստվածային անսահման սիրո, մեղքի ու մահվանհանդեպ հաղթանակի տոնն է։ Փրկչի սերը թեև հանդիպեց ատելության ու թշնամանքի, սակայն Տերըերբեք չտարակուսեց և չընկրկեց։ Մարդկանց նկատմամբ Նրա հոգատարությունը թեև բախվեցմերժումի, Նրա բերած ճշմարտությունը հակադարձվեց կեղծիքով, բայց Քրիստոս իրագործեց Իրառաքելությունը՝ հանուն մարդկության փրկության, և հարություն առնելով հաշտություն հաստատեցաշխարհի և Աստծո միջև։ Արդարև, հարությունը այնտեղ է, որտեղ տերունավանդ սերն էհաղթանակում։ Հարության փրկարար շնորհով զորանում են հավատացյալ անձերը և արժանի դառնումհավիտենական կյանքի։ Հարությունը կենդանություն է բերում մեղքերով ծանրաբեռնված հոգիներին ևմարդու ընթացքը ամուր պահում հույսի, սիրո և արդարության մեջ։
Քրիստոսի փրկագործությամբ արշալույսված դարերի հոլովույթում հարության հավատն ու շնորհըվերափոխել են անձերի ու ժողովուրդների, գոտեպնդել պատուհասների ու փորձությունների մեջ, զորություն պարգևել հաղթահարելու խաչելությունները, վեր հառնելու գողգոթաներից և հաղթանակածքայլելու հարուցյալ կյանքի ճանապարհով։ Այս ճշմարտությամբ ներշնչված է Սուրբ Ներսես ՇնորհալիՀայրապետը օրհնաբանում Տիրոջ հրաշափառ Հարությունը՝ ասելով. «Ուրախացան ազգք մարդկան, յորժամ լուան զՔո յարութիւնդ»։
Սիրելի բարեպաշտ հավատացյալներ, այսօր մարդկության կյանքը ալեկոծված է պառակտումներով, հակառակություններով, ազգամիջյան ատելության կորստաբեր ընթացքներով։ Մենք տեսնում ենք, թեինչպիսի վտանգների մեջ է աշխարհը ծավալվող քաղաքական զարգացումներով, որոնք հանգեցնում ենմիջպետական, տնտեսական և սոցիալական լրջագույն խնդիրների, խաթարում են երկրների ևժողովուրդների ներդաշնակ համակեցությունը։ Աղոթենք, որ փոխհասկացողության և համերաշխությանոգին առավել զորանա մարդկանց մեջ, և խաղաղությունը տիրի ողջ աշխարհում, հատկապես այսօրերին՝ Ռուսաստանի Դաշնության և Ուկրաինայի եղբայր ժողովուրդների կյանքում: Թող Աստծոառաջնորդությամբ մարդկության կյանքում շուտափույթ հանգուցալուծում գտնեն բոլոր բարդ ումտահոգիչ իրավիճակները՝ զերծ պահելու աշխարհը նոր աղետներից։ Մեր Տերը այսօր էլ մարդկությանըտալիս է խաղաղության, եղբայրսիրության պատգամները և կոչում ապրելու աստվածապաշտությամբու մարդասիրությամբ։ Միայն հարուցյալ ընթացքով, Քրիստոսի պատվիրանների համաձայն ապրելովկարող ենք նոր կյանք արարել, որպեսզի, ըստ առաքյալի հորդորի, «ինչպես որ Քրիստոս մեռելներիցհարություն առավ Հոր փառքով, նույնպես և մենք քայլենք նոր կյանքով» (Հռ. 6.4)։
Սիրելի բարեպաշտ հավատացյալներ, Սուրբ Հարության ավետիսն այսօր առանձնակի մխիթարությունու սփոփանք է բերում համայն մեր ժողովրդին, ի մասնավորի պատերազմի արհավիրքներ ապրած մերեղբայրներին ու քույրերին, ովքեր այս պահին էլ վշտերի, նեղությունների մեջ են, անկայունխաղաղության ու անապահովության պայմաններում։ Հատկապես այս դժվարին ժամանակներում մերկյանքը հավատքի և հավատո գործոց կարիքն ունի, որպեսզի հարատևի հարության ուրախության մեջև բարեզարդվի նորանոր իրագործումներով ու հայրենաշեն ձեռքբերումներով։ Ազգային մերանդաստանում հարուցյալ կյանքը նաև նշանակում է ողջախոհություն, անկախ քաղաքականհայացքներից ու տարակարծություններից՝ առ հայրենին հավատարմություն և ազգին անսակարկնվիրում։ Այս ոգով մեր կյանքից պիտի մերժենք անտարբերությունը, անհանդուրժելի, աղետաբերհարմարվողականությունը և հզորություն, միաբանություն ու առաջընթաց ապահովենք աշխարհասփյուռմեր ժողովրդին և շեն ու բարօր ապագա՝ սերունդներին։
Ամենքս այսօր մտահոգ ենք մեր երկրի, մեր պետականության անվտանգության խնդիրներով, արտաքին մարտահրավերներով, ներհասարակական ու ներքաղաքական անհանգստություններով ուլարվածությամբ։ Մտահոգ ենք մեր հայրենյաց սրբազան մասունքի՝ Արցախի բարդ իրավիճակով, որինկատմամբ տակավին շարունակվում են սադրանքներն ու ոտնձգությունները։ Սիրելի արցախցիներ, Մենք քաջ գիտենք ձեր հերոսական ոգին, ձեզ հատուկ արիությունն ու փորձություններին դիմակայելուհաստատակամությունը։ Վստահ ենք՝ դուք չեք ընկճվելու դժվարությունների հանդիման և շենացնելու եքձեր հարազատ բնօրրանը՝ առ Աստված ապավինությամբ վառ պահելով հույսն ու հավատը, որմարդասիրությունն ու արդարությունը պիտի հաղթեն, որ պիտի ծագի Արցախի ազատ ու անկախապրելու իրավունքի ճանաչման լուսավոր առավոտը։ Սիրելի բարեպաշտ ժողովուրդ, ազգովի զորակիցլինենք ծանր փորձությունների միջով անցնող Հայաստան ու Արցախ մեր հայրենիքին, նեցուկ դառնանքկարիքի մեջ գտնվող մեր ազգակիցներին և գոտեպնդված հարության հույսով՝ նվիրական մեր երկիրըդարձնենք հրաշափառ հարության իրական վկայարան։ Հայրապետիս հայցն է առ հարուցյալ Տերը, որազգս հայոց տեսնի իր կրած տառապանքների վարձքը և կերտի սրբազան հայրենիքի վերածնունդը։
Մաղթանաց այս աղոթքը Մեր շուրթերին և «Քրիստոս յարեաւ ի մեռելոց» ավետիսով եղբայրական Մերողջույնն ենք բերում մեր Սուրբ Եկեղեցու Նվիրապետական Աթոռների գահակալներին՝ Ն.Ս.Օ.Տ.Տ.
