His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, offered a special message to Armenian faithful throughout the world on Sunday, October 1, 2023: a day declared as a pan-national “Prayer for Artsakh.” The date had previously been reserved for a celebratory “Blessing of the Holy Muron” ceremony—but that latter was postponed by a decision of the Supreme Spiritual Council, in light of the unfolding tragedy for Artsakh and its Armenians.
Accordingly, on October 1 His Holiness presided over the Divine Liturgy celebrated before the open-air St. Drtad Altar at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, and afterwards led the special prayer ceremony. The occasion—which was also the Feast of the Holy Cross of Varak according to the Armenian Church calendar—drew a large international crowd of faithful to the ceremony at the Mother See, while Armenians in parishes across the world held their own prayer services on the day.
For the ceremonies at Holy Etchmiadzin, Catholicos Karekin II brought a precious relic of the Armenian Church out for a rare public viewing and veneration. During the procession to the altar, the Catholicos held the Holy Lance of Keghart: believed since ancient times to be a relic of the Roman lance that pierced the side of Christ before he was brought down from the cross, as described in the Gospel of St. John (Jn 19:31-37).
With the Holy Lance of Keghart in his hands, His Holiness conferred a blessing on the faithful in attendance, and on the homeland of Armenia and Artsakh.

During the Prayer for Artsakh, October 1, 2023
Dear Faithful:
For all of us, our souls are filled with infinite pain and deep concern. These are difficult and alarming days for the Armenian nation. Today, united at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and in Armenian churches throughout the diaspora, we raise a prayer in support of our brothers and sisters in Artsakh, who, having been subjected to terrible suffering and inhuman deprivation, have now taken the path of emigration. The land of Artsakh is being de-populated, its holy soil is once more orphaned.
We reflect with pain on this national tragedy. The response of the world to the aggressive, genocidal actions of Azerbaijan was inadequate; while the policy adopted by the authorities of the Republic of Armenia towards Artsakh, and the divisiveness of our people, have now led to the loss of Artsakh.
Today, the Republic of Armenia is facing the same threat: the danger of losing our sovereignty and statehood is being openly discussed. The security challenges, the territorial losses, the haste shown in the process of establishing peace under obvious coercion, as well as the methods of government communication with the public, have created an atmosphere of mistrust and have brought about a justifiable feeling of dissent, which in the present complex situation can only lead to painful developments.
We urge our statesmen to refrain from sowing social conflict—which will only divide and weaken the people with new dividing lines, with unbalanced words and expressions. In order to provide a dignified solution to the existing problems, to rescue the Motherland from this dangerous situation, it is necessary to act soberly, to correctly assess the geopolitical realities, and to use all the expert potential and experience of our nation in the crisis that is deepening day by day, in order not to lead our country to new losses, especially considering the ambitions and belligerent rhetoric of the enemy. The bloody picture of Artsakh is a testimony to the fact that the aggressive aspirations of the enemy are uncontrollable, and there is no discrimination in the choice of means.
We also urge the national, religious, public, and political structures to unite our people to face the current difficult challenges, and to act in a unified manner for the sake of guaranteeing the future of our country.
Dear people: In the face of existential threats, our national unity and cohesion is imperative. In unity is our power; in unity is the way to prevent the coming disaster. Now, let us live and act with love, with a high awareness of turning the pain of our losses into achievement. Let us turn our will and spirit into a real awakening of national life and a united force for the protection of the rights of the Motherland and the people. Let us testify with our lives to our genuine dedication to our Motherland, our nation, and our long-held dream of independent statehood.
Beloved ones, in the current difficult conditions, we as a people have become, in the words of the Apostle: “We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9).
Indeed, our faith, hope, patriotism and devotion to the nation can never be destroyed. That is why this nationwide “Prayer for Artsakh” is not a prayer of hopelessness, not a prayer of sorrow—but a prayer of hope and consolation, revival and resurrection.
Let this nationwide Prayer gird us, and unite us as God’s own people, with one and the same vision of strengthening the nation and the countrymen.
This moment is also an opportunity for us to reflect on the course of our lives, to remove anti-patriotic phenomena from us, to correct mistakes and shortcomings, in order to strengthen ourselves as a nation, state, and church.
The priceless symbol of our country, the land of Artsakh, is ours and is in our hearts, and the consciousness of Artsakh being Armenian will never weaken in future generations.
Our dear pious children, let us pray together for our people of Artsakh and be kind and supportive to our exiled brothers and sisters, consoling them in their pain and troubles, and showing the necessary care for their existence and needs.
Beloved children of Artsakh, be strong and resilient with your special brave spirit. Remain steadfast in your faith and hope, continue to live and create, not succumbing to difficulties. Keep your love for Artsakh and your native heritage alive forever. All our people and the church are with you and in these painful days, with ready commitments to support you.
On this day of nationwide Prayer in support of our children of Artsakh, sacred relics are placed in a number of churches in Armenia for the veneration and fervent prayer of the faithful.
For the pilgrims coming to the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, the Christ-bearing Holy Lance of Keghart has been brought forth today as a sign of the terrible sufferings and victorious resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
By the power of the Holy Lance of Keghart, our people survived disasters, massacres, and genocide; we kept faith strong in the face of hopelessness; we revived hope in disbelief; we turned love for goodness into a fight against evil.
With this confidence, let us send our prayer to God, saying: “Almighty Lord, grant us your blessings and save us from dangers and trials. Give us the strength to withstand the attacks of evil, to rise above its blows. Keep the heavenly light of resurrection burning in our lives, and keep us under the protection of your holy Right Hand. Keep in your care our brothers and sisters from Artsakh, who have always been loyal to you, as they enter a time of suffering from deportation and the related hardships. Grant peace to the souls of those who died for our national defense; bring healing to the wounded and afflicted; bestow freedom on our captive children. Beneficent and Almighty God, increase Faith, Hope, and Love in us, so that we may live according to your will. We pray for Peace—for the whole world and for our homeland—as well as Prosperity and Security for our people around the world, as we glorify your most Holy Trinity with constant prayer.”

Սիրելի բարեպաշտ ժողովուրդ,
Անսահման ցավով և խոր մտահոգությամբ են համակված բոլորիս հոգիները։ Ծանր ու տագնապալիօրեր է ապրում ազգս հայոց։ Այսօր, համախմբված Մայր Աթոռ Սուրբ Էջմիածնում և հայոցեկեղեցիներում ի սփյուռս աշխարհի, աղոթք ենք բարձրացնում ի զորակցություն Արցախի մեր քույրերիու եղբայրների, ովքեր, ենթարկվելով սոսկալի տառապանքների ու անմարդկային զրկանքների, բռնելեն գաղթի ճանապարհը։ Հայաթափվում է Արցախ աշխարհը, վերստին որբանում սրբազան հողը հայոց։
Ազգային այս ողբերգության հանդիման ցավով ենք անդրադառնում, որ Ադրբեջանի զավթողական, ցեղասպանական գործողություններին աշխարհի անհամարժեք արձագանքը, Արցախի նկատմամբՀայաստանի Հանրապետության իշխանությունների որդեգրած քաղաքականությունը և մեր ժողովրդիերկպառակությունը հանգեցրեցին Արցախի կորստյանը։

Մեր հորդորն է պետական այրերին՝ նոր բաժանարար գծերով, անկշռադատ խոսքերով ուարտահայտություններով ատելություն չսերմանել, չմասնատել և չտկարացնել ժողովրդին։ Առկահիմնախնդիրներին արժանապատիվ հանգուցալուծում ապահովելու, հայրենիքը վտանգաշատ այսկացությունից դուրս բերելու համար հարկ է գործել սթափ, ճիշտ գնահատել աշխարհաքաղաքականիրողությունները և օրեցօր խորացող ճգնաժամի մեջ ի գործ դնել մեր ազգի փորձագիտական ողջներուժն ու փորձառությունը՝ չառաջնորդելու համար մեր երկիրը նոր կորուստների, հատկապես նկատիառնելով թշնամու հավակնություններն ու ռազմատենչ հռետորաբանությունը։ Արցախյան արյունալիպատկերը վկայությունն է այն իրողության, որ անզուսպ են թշնամու զավթողական ձգտումները, ևխտրություն չի դրվում միջոցների ընտրության հարցում։
Մեր հորդորն ենք ուղղում նաև ազգային, կրոնական, հասարակական, քաղաքական կառույցներինմիավորելու մեր ժողովրդին ներկա ծանր մարտահրավերների հանդիման և համախմբված գործելու՝հանուն մեր երկրի ապագայի երաշխավորման։
Սիրելի ժողովուրդ, գոյաբանական սպառնալիքների առջև հրամայական է մեր համազգայինմիաբանությունն ու համախմբվածությունը, քանզի միասնականության մեջ է մեր զորությունը, միասնականության մեջ է գալիք աղետը կանխելու ուղին։ Արդ, ապրենք ու գործենք սիրով, մերկորուստների ցավը ձեռքբերումներ դարձնելու բարձր գիտակցությամբ, մեր կամքն ու ոգին վերածենքազգային կյանքի իրական արթնության և հայրենիքի ու ժողովրդի իրավունքների պաշտպանությանմիաբան ուժի, մեր կյանքով վկայենք ճշմարիտ նվիրումը հայրենիքին, ազգին և դարերով փայփայվածմեր անկախ պետականությանը։
Սիրելիներ, առկա դժվարին պայմաններում մենք՝ որպես ժողովուրդ, դարձել ենք, առաքյալի խոսքիհամաձայն, «ամեն կողմից ճնշված, բայց ոչ ընկճված, կարոտյալ, բայց ոչ հուսահատ, հալածված, բայցոչ լքված, չարչարված, բայց ոչ մեռած» (Բ Կորնթ. 4.8): Արդարև, մեր հավատը, հույսը, հայրենասիրությունն ու ազգանվիրումը երբեք հնարավոր չէ սպանել։ Այդ իսկ պատճառով հանունԱրցախի համազգային աղոթքը մեզ համար անհուսության աղոթք չէ, վշտի աղոթք չէ, տրտմությանաղոթք չէ, այլ հույսի ու մխիթարության, վերհառնումի ու հարության աղոթք է։ Համազգային այս աղոթքըթող գոտեպնդի մեզ, համախմբի մեզ որպես Աստծո սեփական ժողովուրդ, ազգի ու հայրենյացհզորացման մեկ և նույն տեսիլքով։ Այս պահը մեզ համար նաև առիթ է անդրադարձ կատարելու մերկյանքի ընթացքին՝ հեռացնելու համար մեզանից հայրենադավ երևույթները, սրբագրելու սխալներն ութերացումները, որպեսզի զորանանք որպես ազգ, պետություն ու Եկեղեցի։ Մեր հայրենյաց անգիննշխարը՝ Արցախ աշխարհը, մերն է ու մեր սրտում է, և Արցախի հայապատկան լինելու գիտակցությունըերբեք չի տկարանա սերունդների մեջ։
Սիրելի բարեպաշտ զավակներ Մեր, միասնաբար աղոթենք Արցախի մեր ժողովրդի համար և ամենկարելիությամբ նեցուկ և սատար լինենք տարագիր մեր քույրերին ու եղբայրներին՝ մխիթարելով իրենցցավի ու նեղությունների մեջ և իրենց կեցության ու կարիքների համար անհրաժեշտ հոգածությունցուցաբերենք։
Արցախցի սիրելի զավակներ, ձեզ հատուկ քաջարի ոգով ամուր ու տոկուն եղեք, հաստատուն մնացեքձեր հավատի ու հույսի մեջ, շարունակեք ապրել ու արարել՝ չընկրկելով դժվարությունների առջև, ևմշտարթուն պահեք ձեր սերը Արցախի և հայրենական ավանդների նկատմամբ։ Համայն մերժողովուրդը և Եկեղեցին ձեզ հետ են և այս տառապալի օրերին պատրաստակամհանձնառություններով զորակից ձեզ։
Համազգային աղոթքի այս օրը, ի զորակցություն Արցախի մեր զավակների, Հայաստանի մի շարքեկեղեցիներում զետեղված են սրբազան մասունքներ հավատացյալների երկրպագության և ջերմեռանդաղոթքի համար։ Մայր Աթոռ Սուրբ Էջմիածին եկող ուխտավորներիդ համար դուրս է բերվելՔրիստոսամուխ Սուրբ Գեղարդը՝ որպես նշան մեր Տեր և Փրկիչ Հիսուս Քրիստոսի սոսկալիչարչարանքների և հաղթական Հարության։ Սուրբ Գեղարդի զորությամբ մեր ժողովուրդը վերապրել էարհավիրքներ, կոտորածներ ու ցեղասպանություն, ամուր պահել հավատքը անհուսության մեջ, անհավատության մեջ վերածնել հույսը և բարու հանդեպ սերը դարձրել չարի դեմ պայքար։
Այս վստահությամբ մեր աղոթքը վերառաքենք առ Աստված՝ ասելով. «Տեր Աստված, պարգևիր մեզ Քոօրհնությունը և փրկիր վտանգներից ու փորձություններից։ Տուր զորությունը չարի հարձակումներինդիմակայելու, հարվածներից վեր հառնելու։ Մշտավառ պահիր մեր կյանքում հարության երկնահեղլույսը և պահպանիր մեզ Քո Սուրբ Աջի հովանու ներքո։ Քո խնամքի և օրհնության մեջ պահիր Քեզ միշտհավատարիմ, բռնագաղթի տառապանաց և նեղությունների ճանապարհով անցնող արցախցի մերքույրերին ու եղբայրներին։ Հանգստություն շնորհիր հայրենյաց պաշտպանության համար զոհվածներիհոգիներին, ապաքինում՝ վիրավորներին ու նեղյալներին և ազատություն՝ գերեվարված մերզավակներին։ Բարերար և Ամենազոր Աստված, ավելացրու մեզանում հավատքը, հույսն ու սերը, որպեսզի ապրենք Քո կամքի համաձայն և մշտահունչ աղոթքով հայցենք խաղաղություն համայնաշխարհին ու մեր հայրենիքին, բարօրություն ու ապահովություն աշխարհասփյուռ մեր ժողովրդին՝անդադար փառաբանելով Ամենասուրբ Երրորդությանդ»։
