His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, celebrated the Divine Liturgy at St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in Yerevan, on Easter Sunday: the Feast of the Glorious Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
His Easter sermon on March 31 addressed the power of joy and hope contained in the reality of Christ’s resurrection. But His Holiness also struck more somber notes, as he surveyed the difficulties Armenians are enduring at the present time.
“The holy and miraculous Resurrection of the Lord is a bracing call for all of us to face the challenges facing our country with hope and courage,” he said, “especially in this difficult post-war period, when Artsakh is occupied and depopulated, and the expansionist and provocative actions of Azerbaijan create direct threats to the security of our state.”
“To rebuke these reprehensible realities, our people must overcome internal differences, and heal the wounds of our nation, which has already suffered such heavy losses,” Catholicos Karekin said.
Even in the face of the harshest realities, the Resurrection of Christ is an assurance that hope for the future is not in vain. “Our story does not end with the graves of the brave men martyred in Artsakh,” His Holiness said. “Indeed, the grave dug for us by the Evil One will always remain empty—because we are a people who overcome tribulations with Christ, and we rise with Him from every Golgotha with faith in the Resurrection.”

Throughout the Easter liturgy, Catholicos Karekin II was assisted on the altar by Archbishop Natan Hovhannisyan and Artsakh’s Bishop Vertanes Abrahamyan. The mammoth cathedral in Yerevan was filled with worshippers, who received Catholicos Karekin’s blessings as he processed through the sanctuary.

“Let us bless and glorify your holy, wonderful, and victorious Resurrection.” (The Book of Hours)
Dear Faithful Believers:
Today, the news of the miraculous Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ is heard from the holy tabernacles of our churches. The miraculous Good News fills our hearts—hearts embittered by the pain and loss of the homeland and national life. It fills them with soul-restoring Hope. Through the Resurrection, Life was victorious; Death was defeated. With faith and trust in God, let us praise the Lord with these timely words: “We bless and glorify your holy, wonderful, and victorious Resurrection.”
With His Resurrection, Christ freed humanity from the power of evil, showed the way of forgiveness and love, established reconciliation between man and God, and offered the hope and grace of eternal life. By the mercy of God, the light of life has spread over the darkness of death. The life-giving cross, on which the Holy Blood of the Lord was shed, has become a sign of victory over death, faith in the Resurrection, a heavenly power to defeat evil.
Yes, true victory lies is the holy and wonderful Resurrection of Christ. In the ever-changing events of the world, and especially in difficult times, believers are strengthened by the grace of the Resurrection to rise up from trials, to reject destructive thoughts and actions, to overcome the scourges of catastrophic wars, to be renewed by the Lord, as the Holy Scripture testifies: “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature” (2 Cor 5:17).
Even today, we hear the invitation to be guided by God’s commandments: to rebuke death; to embrace the victory of life; to be the noble defender of truth and justice; to replace the dead life-without-God with a new life created in the Lord. Heeding this call, united by the sacred covenant, we have faced many trials in history. Today, the testimony of the Resurrection is also the declaration of our people’s faith and loyalty to those sacred values which, for centuries, have been the guarantee of the identity and being of the Armenian nation. We urgently need to educate future generations in these values, and preserve the heritage of our ancestors, which have enriched the treasury of humanity.
Dear pious children in Armenia and in the diaspora: The holy and miraculous Resurrection of the Lord is a bracing call for all of us to face the challenges facing our country with hope and courage—especially in this difficult post-war period, when Artsakh is occupied and depopulated, and the expansionist and provocative actions of Azerbaijan create direct threats to the security of our state. The illegal captivity of Artsakh’s political leadership and our children continues, as well as the unconcealed policy of neglecting the rights of Artsakh Armenians, and destroying the Armenian spiritual and cultural heritage in Artsakh. To rebuke these reprehensible realities, our people must overcome internal differences, and heal the wounds of our nation, which has already suffered such heavy losses.
The resurrected life begins with the determination to live according to the teachings of Christ. We must keep this consciousness, this spirit, indomitable. We must not succumb to the trials that plague us, nor act with a defeatist mentality and turn into a dejected and weak nation. Our story does not end with the graves of the brave men martyred in Artsakh. Indeed, the grave dug for us by the Evil One will always remain empty—because we are a people who overcome tribulations with Christ, and we rise with Him from every Golgotha with faith in the Resurrection.
The future awaiting us is not darkness and death, but Life and Resurrection. Not only the individual, but also a people can rise up with God—if they keep their faith strong, their will and spirit indomitable. In the current difficult conditions of our people, it is vital to live and act with patriotism and devotion to the nation. With this firm purpose, we can build new horizons for our history, and reawaken our dignified national-ecclesiastical life. Then, the call of the Apostle will be a reality for our people as well: “O Death, where is your victory? O Grave, where is your sting?” (1 Cor 15:55). So let us keep faith, hope, and love for the resurrected Christ alive in our hearts, and with it a positive expectation of the future. God calls us to resurrection—so let us rid ourselves of fear and despair; let us rid ourselves of hatred and enmity. Instead, let us fix our eyes on the Savior and follow Him on the victorious path of Resurrection.
With this wish and the good news of the Holy Resurrection, we send our blessings to our Holy Church and its hierarchs: to His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia; to His Beatitude Archbishop Nourhan Manoukian, Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem; to His Beatitude Archbishop Sahak Mashalian, Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople; and to all the spiritual fathers of our sister churches. We ask for the support of Almighty God in the accomplishment of their mission. We send our love and blessing to the entire spiritual leadership of our Holy Church, and to all believers among our people in our homeland and the diaspora.
Beloved children, on this bright day of the Holy and Miraculous Resurrection, let us raise a prayer from our hearts to God to grant peace and well-being to the world, to keep His Holy Right over our homeland, and to bless and brighten our Armenian nation with heavenly graces, to live a safe and secure life, and to glorify the Holy Trinity now and always and forever. Amen.

Սիրելի բարեպաշտ հավատացյալներ,
Մեր Տեր Հիսուս Քրիստոսի Հրաշափառ Հարության ավետիսն է հնչում այսօր մեր եկեղեցիների սուրբ խորաններից։ Սքանչելախորհուրդ ավետիսը հույսով ու հոգենորոգ զգացումներով է պարուրում հայրենիքի ու ազգային կյանքի ցավերով ու կորուստներով դառնացած մեր սրտերը։ Կյանքը հաղթանակել է, մահը պարտվել ու խորտակվել։ Հավատքով ու առ Աստված ապավինությամբ միասնաբար օրհնաբանենք Տիրոջը ժամասացի խոսքերով. «Սուրբ և հրաշալի և հաղթող Քո Հարությունը օրհնում ենք և փառավորում»։
Քրիստոս Իր Հարությամբ մարդկությանը ազատել է չարի իշխանությունից, ցույց տվել ներման և սիրո ճանապարհը, հաշտություն հաստատել մարդու և Աստծո միջև և ընծայել հավիտենական կյանքի հույսն ու շնորհը։ Աստվածորդու ողորմածությամբ կյանքի արշալույսն է տարածվել մահվան խավարի վրա։ Կենարար խաչը, որի վրա հեղվեց Տիրոջ Սուրբ Արյունը, մահվան հանդեպ հաղթության նշան է դարձել, Հարության հավատը՝ չարին պարտության մատնելու երկնապարգև ուժ։
Այո, սիրելիներ, հաղթող է, սուրբ և հրաշալի Քրիստոսի Հարությունը։ Աշխարհի հարափոփոխ իրադարձությունների և հատկապես բարդ ու դժվարին իրավիճակների մեջ Հարության շնորհներով հավատացյալները զորանում են՝ վեր հառնելու փորձություններից, մերժելու կորստաբեր երևույթներն ու կործանարար մտածումներն ու գործերը, հաղթահարելու աղետաբեր պատերազմների արհավիրքները, նորոգվելու Տիրոջով, ինչպես որ Սուրբ Գիրքն է վկայում. «Եթե մեկը Քրիստոսի մեջ է, նա նոր արարած է» (Բ Կորնթ. 5.17)։
Համայն մարդկությանն այսօր էլ հնչում է հրավերը առաջնորդվելու աստվածադիր պատվիրաններով, մահվան հանդիման կերտելու կյանքի հաղթանակը, անվեհեր պաշտպանը լինելու ճշմարտության ու արդարության և առանց Աստծո մեռյալ գոյությունը փոխարինելու Տիրոջ հետ հարուցյալ կյանքի։ Այս կոչին ականջալուր, «վասն հավատո, վասն հայրենյաց» սրբազան ուխտով միաբանված՝ պատմության հոլովույթներում դիմակայել ենք բազում դժվարությունների ու փորձությունների։ Հարության հավատի վկայությունը նաև մեր օրերում հռչակումն է մեր ժողովրդի դավանանքի և ազգային սրբազան արժեքներին հավատարմության, որոնք դարեր շարունակ երաշխիքն են եղել հայոց ազգի ինքնության ու լինելության, դպրության ու գիտության զարգացման։ Հարկ է այս արժեքներով սերունդներ կրթել և անաղարտ ու անկորուստ պահպանել մարդկության գիտամշակութային գանձարանը հարստացրած մեր նախնյաց ավանդներն ու ժառանգությունը։
Սիրելի բարեպաշտ զավակներ ի Հայաստան և ի սփյուռս, Տիրոջ Սուրբ և Հրաշափառ Հարությունը գոտեպնդող խրախույս է ամենքիս հույսով ու արիությամբ դիմագրավելու մեր երկրի առջև ծառացած մարտահրավերները՝ հատկապես հետպատերազմյան այս ծանր շրջանում, երբ բռնազավթված ու հայաթափված է Արցախը, և չեն դադարում Ադրբեջանի ծավալապաշտական ու սադրիչ գործողությունները նորանոր պահանջներով, որոնք անմիջական սպառնալիքներ են ստեղծում մեր պետության անվտանգությանը։ Հանցագործ դրսևորումներով շարունակվում են Արցախի պատանդառված քաղաքական ղեկավարության և անօրինաբար գերության մեջ պահվող մեր զավակների նվաստացումները, ինչպես և արցախահայության իրավունքների անտեսման, Արցախում հայկական հոգևոր-մշակութային ժառանգության յուրացման ու ոչնչացման անթաքույց քաղաքականությունը։ Դատապարտելի այս իրողությունների հանդիման մեր ժողովրդի սեպուհ պարտքն է հաղթահարել ներազգային տարաձայնություններն ու անմիաբանությունը, լծվել ծանր կորուստներ կրած մեր ազգի վերքերի ամոքմանը և կարողությունների մեկտեղմամբ հայրենիքի հզորացմանը։
Հարուցյալ կյանքը, հիրավի, սկսվում է քրիստոսավանդ պատգամներով ապրելու վճռականությամբ, արհավիրքներից ու տառապանքներից դեպի կենսանորոգ ձեռքբերումներ առաջին քայլից։ Այս գիտակցությունը, այս ոգին պիտի աննկուն պահենք մեզանում, չընկրկենք մեզ պատուհասած փորձությունների դիմաց, չգործենք պարտվողական հոգեբանությամբ և չվերածվենք վհատված ու տկար ազգի՝ վտանգելով մեր հայրենիքի ապագան և անկախ պետականությունը։ Մեր ընթացքը չի վերջանում մեր մարտիրոսների ու քաջորդիների նահատակության վայրերում և ոչ էլ Արցախում թողնված շիրիմների մոտ։ Չարի կողմից մեզ համար փորված գերեզմանը բոլոր ժամանակներում թափուր է մնալու, քանզի մենք Քրիստոսի հետ նեղությունները հաղթահարող և ամեն գողգոթայից հարության հավատքով հառնող ժողովուրդ ենք։
Արդարև, մեր ապագայի վերաբերյալ վճիռը խավարինն ու մահվանը չէ, այլ կյանքինն ու հարությանը։ Աստծո հետ հզոր հավատքով, անընկճելի կամքով ու ոգով վերհառնել կարող է ոչ միայն անհատը, այլև ազգն ու պետությունը։ Մեր ժողովրդի համար ներկա բարդ պայմաններում կենսական և հրամայական է մեր երկրի հզորացումը, կենսական է ապրել ու գործել անսակարկ հայրենասիրությամբ ու ազգանվիրումով։ Այս հաստատակամ ընթացքով կարող պիտի լինենք կերտելու նոր հորիզոնները մեր պատմության և վերազարթոնքը պետական, ազգային-եկեղեցական մեր արժանապատիվ կյանքի։ Այսպես իրականություն պիտի լինի առաքյալի բացականչությունը նաև մեր ժողովրդի համար. «Ո՞ւր է, մա՛հ, քո հաղթությունը, ո՞ւր է, գերեզման, քո խայթոցը» (Ա Կորնթ. 15.55): Արդ, վառ պահենք մեր սրտերում առ հարուցյալ Քրիստոս մեր հավատը, հույսն ու սերը, գալիքի բարի ակնկալությունը։ Աստված մեզ կոչում է հարության, ուստի, թոթափենք մեզանից երկյուղն ու հուսահատությունը, հեռացնենք մեզանից ատելությունն ու թշնամանքը, պիղատոսյան ու հուդայական գործելակերպը, մեր աչքերը հառենք հարուցյալ Փրկչին և ընթանանք միմիայն հարության հաղթական ճանապարհով։
Այս մաղթանքով և Սուրբ Հարության ավետիսով ողջունում ենք մեր Սուրբ Եկեղեցու Նվիրապետական Աթոռների գահակալներին՝ Ն.Ս.Օ.Տ.Տ. Արամ Ա Մեծի Տանն Կիլիկիո Կաթողիկոսին, Երուսաղեմի Հայոց Պատրիարք Ամենապատիվ Տ. Նուրհան արքեպիսկոպոս Մանուկյանին, Կոստանդնուպոլսի Հայոց Պատրիարք Ամենապատիվ Տ.
