On Tuesday, September 16, His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, met with His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. It was the first personal meeting between the two church leaders.
The meeting took place in Italy, at the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo–the summer residence of the popes since 1626. Catholicos Karekin II was accompanied by a delegation of clergy from the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, as well as by Roman Catholic Cardinal Kurt Koch, president of the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Promotion of Christian Unity, and Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, the Armenian Church’s Pontifical Legate of Western Europe, and its Representative to the Vatican.
After a fraternal greeting, the pontiffs of the Armenian and the Roman Catholic churches held a private meeting.
The Catholicos of All Armenians extended his heartfelt congratulations to Pope Leo XIV on his election, as well as on the occasion of his 70th birthday, praying that the Heavenly Lord grant him strength and ability and make His Holiness’s pontificate fruitful for the glory of God and the peaceful and prosperous life of humanity. Catholicos Karekin II reflected with satisfaction that the fraternal ties between the two churches have been strengthened through gracious meetings and joint testimonies of faith, recalling the visit of the blessed Pope St. John Paul II to Armenia in 2001, and the auspicious occasion of hosting Pope Francis at Holy Etchmiadzin in 2016 on the occasion of a pilgrimage entitled “A Visit to the First Christian Nation.”
Among the memorable milestones in the relations between the churches, His Holiness noted the Divine Liturgy celebrated in St. Peter’s Basilica in 2015 on the occasion of the centenary of the Armenian Genocide and the proclamation of St. Gregory of Narek, one of the greatest saints of the Armenian Church, as a Doctor of the Universal Church.
The Catholicos expressed confidence that relations between the two churches will continue to develop in the same fraternal spirit and warmth, resulting in new and good joint achievements.
United Efforts Towards Justice and Peace
During their conversation, Pope Leo and Catholicos Karekin touched upon developments in the world, the challenges facing Armenia and the Armenian people, and the trials they are enduring. The attention of the Pope Leo was also drawn to the problems of the Armenians of Artsakh, who were displaced from the cradle of their ancestors, Artsakh, the preservation of the Armenian spiritual and cultural heritage facing the threat of destruction in Artsakh, and the imperative of releasing prisoners of war and hostages.
The two leaders emphasized the indispensable role of Christian institutions in establishing justice and peace in the world, ensuring the harmonious coexistence of peoples, and enriching faith, hope, and love in the hearts of people. The two emphasized the need to make united efforts to spread the light of the Gospel, protect human rights, and create a prosperous and secure world.
Catholicos Karekin II concluded the visit by extended an invitation to Pope Leo XIV to visit Armenia.
At the close of the meeting the two pontiffs exchanged gifts, and the members of the Armenian Church delegation received Pope Leo’s blessing. The Armenian delegation included two former primates of the Eastern Diocese of America: Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, and Bishop Daniel Findikyan.
As part of his trip to the Vatican, Catholicos Karekin II visited St. Mary’s Basilica in Rome, where he prayed for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis, of blessed memory, before the late Pope’s tomb. Since his election as Catholicos 25 years ago, His Holiness Karekin II has met with four popes: St. John Paul II, Benedict XVI, Francis, and now Leo XIV.

Ամենայն Հայոց Կաթողիկոսը հանդիպում ունեցավ Հռոմի Սրբազան Քահանայապետի հետ
Սեպտեմբերի 16-ին Ն.Ս.Օ.Տ.Տ. Գարեգին Երկրորդ Ծայրագույն Պատրիարք և Ամենայն Հայոց Կաթողիկոսը պատվիրակության և Սուրբ Աթոռի Քրիստոնեական միության խթանման բաժնի նախագահ կարդինալ Կուրտ Քոխի ուղեկցությամբ Վատիկանից մեկնեց Կաստել Գանդոլֆոյի առաքելական պալատ, ուր հանդիպում ունեցավ Հռոմի Սրբազան Քահանայապետ Լևոն 14-րդ Պապի հետ։
Եղբայրական ողջագուրումից հետո Հայաստանյայց Առաքելական Սուրբ Եկեղեցու և Հռոմի Կաթոլիկ Եկեղեցու Հովվապետերն ունեցան առանձնազրույց։
Ամենայն Հայոց Կաթողիկոսն իր սրտագին շնորհավորանքները բերեց Սուրբ Պետրոսի Աթոռի գահակալին ընտրության, ինչպես նաև ծննդյան 70-ամյա նշանակալի հոբելյանի առիթով՝ հայցելով, որ Երկնավոր Տերը ուժ և կարողություն շնորհի նրան և առատ պտուղներով արդյունավորի Նորին Սրբության հովվապետությունը Աստծո փառքի և մարդկության խաղաղ ու բարօր կյանքի համար:
Վեհափառ Հայրապետը գոհունակությամբ անդրադարձավ, որ երկու Եկեղեցիների միջև եղբայրական կապերն ամրապնդվել են շնորհառատ հանդիպումների և հավատքի համատեղ վկայությունների միջոցով՝ հիշելով երջանկահիշատակ Սուրբ Հովհաննես Պողոս Երկրորդ Պապի այցելությունը Հայաստան 2001 թվականին, ապա 2016 թվականին երջանկահիշատակ Ֆրանցիսկոս Պապին Սուրբ Էջմիածնում հյուրընկալելու բարեպատեհ առիթը «այց առաջին քրիստոնյա երկիր» խորագրով ուխտագնացության կապակցությամբ: Հայոց Եկեղեցու և Հռոմի Կաթոլիկ Եկեղեցու փոխհարաբերությունների հիշարժան հանգրվաններից Նորին Սրբությունը նկատեց 2015 թվականին Հայոց ցեղասպանության հարյուրերորդ տարելիցի կապակցությամբ Սուրբ Պետրոսի տաճարում մատուցված սրբազան Պատարագը և Հայոց Եկեղեցու մեծագույն սրբերից Գրիգոր Նարեկացու հռչակումը որպես Տիեզերական Եկեղեցու վարդապետ։
Ամենայն Հայոց Կաթողիկոսը վստահություն հայտնեց, որ երկու Եկեղեցիների հարաբերությունները կշարունակեն զարգանալ նույն եղբայրական ոգով ու ջերմությամբ՝ արդյունավորվելով նորանոր բարի համատեղ իրագործումներով։
Զրույցի ընթացքում երկու Հովվապետերն անդրադարձան աշխարհում տեղ գտնող արհավիրքներին ու մտահոգիչ զարգացումներին, Հայաստանի և հայ ժողովրդի առջև ծառացած մարտահրավերներին ու դիմագրավվող փորձություններին։ Հռոմի Սրբազան Քահանայապետի ուշադրությանը հանձնվեցին նաև իրենց նախնիների բնօրրանից՝ Արցախից, տեղահանված արցախահայության հիմնախնդիրները, Արցախում ոչնչացման վտանգի առջև կանգնած հայ հոգևոր և մշակութային ժառանգության պահպանության, ռազմագերիների և պատանդառվածների ազատ արձակման հրամայականը։
Հովվապետերը կարևորեցին Եկեղեցիների առաքելությունը աշխարհում արդարության ու խաղաղության հաստատման, ժողովուրդների համերաշխ գոյակցության ապահովման գործում՝ հավատարիմ տերունավանդ կոչման՝ առատացնելու մարդկանց սրտերում հավատը, հույսը և սերը։ Ընդգծվեց անհրաժեշտությունը միավորելու Եկեղեցիների ջանքերը հանուն Ավետարանի լույսի տարածման, մարդկանց իրավունքների պաշտպանության և բարօր ու ապահով աշխարհի կերտման։
Վերջում Նորին Սրբությունը Լևոն 14-րդ Պապին հրավեր ուղղեց այցելելու Հայաստան։
Հանդիպման ավարտին Ամենայն Հայոց Կաթողիկոսի պատվիրակության անդամները ստացան Հռոմի Սրբազան Քահանայապետի օրհնությունը։ Տեղի ունեցավ նվերների փոխանակում։
Վատիկան այցի շրջանակներում Ամենայն Հայոց Կաթողիկոսը եղավ նաև Հռոմի Սուրբ Մարիամ բազիլիկում, ուր երջանկահիշատակ Ֆրանցիսկոս Պապի շիրիմի առջև աղոթք բարձրացրեց առ Աստված վախճանյալ Քահանայապետի հոգու հանգստության համար։
