On Sunday, August 13, the Armenian Church will observe the Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother-of-God, one of the church’s five major feast days. It commemorates how St. Mary at her death was taken up in body and soul, or “assumed,” into heaven. This act of tenderness was performed by Christ many years after his Ascension, as a loving tribute to the mother who bore and raised him.
At St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral in New York City, Holy Assumption will be celebrated with the Divine Liturgy beginning at 10 a.m. on August 13. Fr. Mamigon Kiledjian will be the celebrant and deliver the homily.
The service will be broadcast live over St. Vartan Cathedral’s Facebook page. The cathedral is open to all.
Traditionally on Assumption Day, the “Blessing of Grapes” service takes place immediately after the Divine Liturgy. The service is rich in symbolism and emphasizes the important role of the Virgin Mary in the revelation of God.
The “Blessing of Grapes” service will follow services at St. Vartan Cathedral, where grapes will be distributed to worshippers.
