His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, led the Pontifical Divine Liturgy at Yerevan’s cathedral of St. Gregory the Illuminator, marking the Feast of the Nativity and Theophany of Jesus Christ, on January 6, 2023.
In a message directed to Armenian faithful throughout the world, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians assured listeners: “The graces of the Nativity of our Lord grant humanity a blessed life anchored in godliness, kindness, truth and justice. God’s Incarnation fortifies souls against despair over loss and pain, inspiring hope and optimism. It brings healing and replenishment to hearts bereft from lack of kindness and love, and strengthens them to face difficulties and overcome the most intractable crises and hardships.”
In an emotional interlude, the Catholicos offered words of fatherly encouragement to the beleaguered Armenian Christians of Artsakh, as they struggle and sacrifice for their right to live on their native land.
“Dear people of Artsakh,” he said, “the thoughts and gazes of our people these days are mainly directed towards you. You have never given up and never backed down in the face of difficulties. Today as well you continue to fight heroically for your free and independent life, for the sake of restoration of historical justice. Following the glorious example of your brave ancestors, remain firm and unshaken in your determination to live and create in your native land. Our Holy Church with its worldwide dioceses is with you, assisting and supporting you. The just demand for the protection of your fundamental rights will prevail with the efforts of all Armenians, and with the support of the international community. We believe that with God’s mercy, our people will shine a light in the darkness surrounding them, and will overcome the most serious challenges they face in their lives.”
At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, His Holiness led the “Blessing of Water” ceremony. Serving as Godfather of the Cross this year was benefactor Hakob Avagyan of Geneva, Switzerland.

On the Feast of the Holy Nativity and Theophany of our Lord Jesus Christ
In the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
“Be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to clothe yourselves with the new self, created according to the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:23-24)
Dear Faithful in the Homeland, in Artsakh and the Diaspora,
On this miraculous day of the Nativity and Theophany of our Lord Jesus Christ, gathered in our churches, we praise the newborn Savior, conveying the salvific good news to each other “Christ is born and revealed, to you and to us a great tiding.”
For more than two thousand years, the good news of the Nativity of Christ resounds in the world, echoes in the souls of people as an unparalleled invitation to be renewed in Christ, to establish peace, increase love. Inspired by the tidings of the Nativity of Christ, the apostle exhorts “Be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to clothe yourselves with the new self, created according to the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” Indeed, the Son of God came into the world to show sinful man the way of salvation that opens to those renewed in Christ. It is on such path that the souls who believe in the Savior and do not bend against tribulations, and those who unshakably fight against sin and evil, proceed.
The graces of the Nativity of our Lord grant humanity a blessed life anchored in godliness, kindness, truth and justice. God’s Incarnation fortifies souls against despair over loss and pain, inspiring hope and optimism. It brings healing and replenishment to hearts bereft from lack of kindness and love, and strengthens them to face difficulties and overcome the most intractable crises and hardships.
However, ignoring the call for renewal in the life of mankind by the birth of the Savior, only leads to actions that are contrary to the commandments of the Son of God. that approach spreads evil and destruction, and leads to clashes and intolerance in society and in the family, as well as enmity among nations and states. Indeed, according to the words of the apostle, “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
Dear ones, the miraculous Nativity of the Son of God instills our Christ-loving people with special courage and adorns them with faith, who have been subjected to new trials in recent years. Throughout the plagues of the Artsakh war and the military hostilities unleashed by Azerbaijan against Armenia several months ago, we again underwent the pain and suffering of heavy losses. Our sons died heroically for the sake of the homeland and thousands became disabled. Dozens of our sons are in captivity and there are still missing people. The only road connecting Artsakh with Armenia has been blocked for a long time, which is leading to a humanitarian catastrophe. In this difficult situation, in order to overcome the problems that we face, we need a true renewal, to be purified in heart, soul, mind, and to be transformed through Christ and in one accord and unity in our commitments for the sake of the nation and the motherland. With such renewal, we will be able to exclude every evil and injustice, the destructive manifestations of fear, violence, hatred and detrimental adaptation from our national life, and consolidate all the national potential with a vision of a prosperous future for the motherland, establish mutual respect and love, firmly anchor Armenia-Diaspora cooperation on solid foundations of trust. We know from our historical experience that we emerged victorious from difficulties when we were united on common goals. Renewed in Christ, united in Christ, walking in the path of God, we, as the apostle says, will emerge victorious from hardships surrounding us today as well.
Dear sons and daughters, asking for God’s help, let us remain firm in our faith in the Lord, and preserve the spiritual experience of the Feast of the Nativity with steadfast hearts. Let us strengthen ourselves with love for the homeland, and support our sisters and brothers suffering in Artsakh and border regions of Armenia in every possible way. Let us realize that we are accountable to the motherland and her generations and let us not endanger our independent statehood. Let us make our good deeds the foundations of our rise and victory and together build the safe and luminous future of our nation and homeland.
At this sacred moment of the Divine Liturgy we address our pontifical message to our brave and courageous sons and daughters of Artsakh. With these feelings and thoughts, and the angelic tidings of the Nativity, we bring our greetings to the incumbents of the Hierarchical Sees of our Holy Church: the Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, His Holiness Aram I; the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Archbishop Nourhan Manougian; and the Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople, His Beatitude Archbishop Sahak Mashalyan; wishing that God support them in the Christ-bestowed ministry.
With fraternal love in Christ, we greet the Heads of our sister churches, asking for the blessings of the Infant Savior in their God-given mission and for the faithful flock.
We extend our Pontifical wishes and love to the clergy of our Holy Church and all our faithful people in our homeland and the Diaspora.
On this gracious morning, with a heartfelt prayer, we ask the Almighty Lord so that the bright radiance of the star of Bethlehem shines perpetually in the firmament of our national life, so that relying on the Savior, we may affirm our course in the paths of love, solidarity and unity.
May there be peace to the world and humanity by the life-giving mystery of the Nativity. May our Armenian people around the world, enlightened by faith, strengthen their homeland, Armenia and Artsakh, make their cherished dreams come true, and glorify the incarnate Christ our Savior by voicing with gratification:
Christ is born and revealed! Blessed is the Revelation of Christ!

ՍՈՒՐԲ ԾՆՆԴԵԱՆ ԵՒ ԱՍՏՈՒԱԾԱՅԱՅՏՆՈՒԹԵԱՆ ՏՕՆԻ ԱՌԻԹՈՎ
Յանուն Հօր եւ Որդւոյ եւ Հոգւոյն Սրբոյ. ամէն։
«Նորոգուեցէք ձեր մտքով եւ հոգով ու հագէք նոր մարդը, որ ստեղծուած է ըստ Աստծու» (Եփ. 4.23-24):
Սիրելի բարեպաշտ հաւատացեալներ ի Հայաստան, յԱրցախ եւ ի սփիւռս,
Մեր Տիրոջ՝ Յիսուս Քրիստոսի Սուրբ Ծննդեան եւ Աստուածայայտնութեան տօնի հրաշազարդ այս օրը, համախմբուած մեր եկեղեցիներում, օրհնաբանում ենք նորածին Փրկչին՝ միմեանց փոխանցելով փրկաւետ ողջոյնը. «Քրիստոս ծնաւ եւ յայտնեցաւ, ձեզ եւ մեզ մեծ աւետիս»։
Աւելի քան երկու հազար տարի Քրիստոսի Սուրբ Ծննդեան աւետիսը հնչում է աշխարհում, արձագանքում մարդկանց հոգիներում որպէս անզուգական հրաւէր՝ Քրիստոսով նորոգուելու, խաղաղութիւն հաստատելու, սէրն առատացնելու։ «Նորոգուեցէք ձեր մտքով եւ հոգով ու հագէք նոր մարդը, որ ստեղծուած է ըստ Աստծու»,- պատգամում է առաքեալը՝ ներշնչուած Տիրոջ Սուրբ Ծննդեան աւետիսով։ Արդարեւ, Աստուածորդին աշխարհ եկաւ՝ մեղանչական մարդուն ցոյց տալու փրկութեան ճանապարհը, որը բացւում է Քրիստոսով նորոգուածների համար: Այս ուղիով են ընթանում Փրկչին հաւատացող ու փորձութիւնների առջեւ չընկրկող հոգիները եւ մեղքի ու չարեաց դէմ աներկբայ մարտնչողները:
Քրիստոսի Սուրբ Ծննդեան շնորհները պարգեւում են մարդկութեանը օրհնեալ կեանք՝ խարսխուած աստուածպաշտութեան, բարութեան, ճշմարտութեան ու արդարութեան վրայ, յոյսով ու լաւատեսութեամբ են զինում կորուստներից ու ցաւերից վշտահար ու յուսաբեկ հոգիներին, ապաքինում եւ լիացնում բարուց ու սիրուց ամայացած սրտերը եւ զօրացնում դժուարութիւններին դիմակայելու, անգամ անվճռելի թուացող ճգնաժամերն ու պատուհասները յաղթահարելու։
Փրկչի Ծննդեամբ մարդկութեան կեանքում հնչող նորոգութեան հրաւէրի անտեսումը, Աստուածորդու պատուիրաններին հակառակ ընթացքները, սակայն, չարիք ու աւեր են սփռում եւ այսօր էլ պատճառ են դառնում հասարակութեան մէջ, ընտանիքներում գժտութիւնների ու անհանդուրժողութեան, ազգերի ու պետութիւնների միջեւ հակամարտութեան ու թշնամանքի: Յիրաւի, առաքեալի խօսքի համաձայն, «մեղքի վարձը մահն է, իսկ Աստծու շնորհը՝ յաւիտենական կեանք՝ մեր Տէր Քրիստոս Յիսուսի միջոցով» (Հռ. 6.23):
Սիրելիներ, Աստուածորդու հրաշափառ Սուրբ Ծնունդը առանձնակի քաջալերութեամբ է համակում, հաւատքով գօտեպնդում Քրիստոսասէր մեր ժողովրդին, որ վերջին տարիներին ենթարկուեց նոր փորձութիւնների։ Արցախեան պատերազմի եւ ամիսներ առաջ Հայաստանի դէմ Ադրբեջանի կողմից սանձազերծուած ռազմական գործողութիւնների արհաւիրքներում մենք վերստին կրեցինք ծանր կորուստների ցաւն ու տառապանքը: Մեր զաւակները հերոսաբար զոհուեցին յանուն հայրենիքի, հազարաւորները հաշմանդամ դարձան։ Մեր տասնեակ զաւակներ գերութեան մէջ են, տակաւին կան անյայտ կորածներ։ Տեւական ժամանակ արգելափակուած է Արցախը Հայաստանի հետ կապող ճանապարհը, ինչը յանգեցրել է հումանիտար աղէտի: Այս ծանր իրավիճակում մեր դէմ ծառացած հիմնախնդիրները յաղթահարելու համար մենք կարիքն ունենք ճշմարիտ նորոգութեան, սրտով, հոգով, մտքով մաքրուելու, Քրիստոսով վերափոխուելու եւ միախորհուրդ ու միակամ դառնալու ազգի եւ հայրենիքի առջեւ մեր յանձնառութիւնների մէջ։ Այսպիսի նորոգութեամբ է, որ կարող կլինենք հայրենական մեր կեանքից բացառել ամենայն չարն ու անարդարը, վախի, բռնութեան, ատելութեան ու յարմարուողականութեան կործանարար դրսեւորումները եւ հայրենիքի բարուոք ապագայի տեսլականով համախմբել ազգային ողջ ներուժը, ամրագրել միմեանց հանդէպ յարգանքն ու սէրը, վստահութեան հաստատուն հիմքերի վրայ խարսխել Հայաստան-սփիւռք գործակցութիւնը։ Պատմական փորձառութեամբ գիտենք, որ նեղութիւններից յաղթանակած ենք դուրս եկել, երբ եղել ենք միաբանուած ընդհանրական նպատակների շուրջ։ Քրիստոսով նորոգուած, Քրիստոսով միասնական, Աստծոյ շաւիղներով քայլելով, մենք, ինչպէս առաքեալն է ասում, մեզ պաշարած փորձութիւններից այսօր էլ յաղթական պիտի դուրս գանք (հմմտ. Հռ. 8.37)։
Սիրելի զաւակներ Մեր, Աստծոյ օգնականութիւնը խնդրելով՝ ամուր մնանք առ Փրկիչ մեր Տէրը հաւատքի մէջ եւ աներկմիտ սրտով պահպանենք մեզանում Սուրբ Ծննդեան յուսաբեր տօնի հոգեւոր ապրումը։ Զօրանանք հայրենիքի սիրով եւ ամեն կարելի հնարաւորութեամբ սատարենք Արցախում եւ Հայաստանի սահմանամերձ շրջաններում դժուարութիւններ կրող մեր քոյրերին ու եղբայրներին։ Գիտակցենք, որ պատասխանատու ենք հայրենիքի ու սերունդների առջեւ եւ վտանգի չենթարկենք մեր անկախ պետականութիւնը։ Մեր բարի գործերը դարձնենք հիմերը մեր վերելքի ու յաղթութեան եւ միասնաբար կերտենք մեր հայրենիքի ու ժողովրդի ապահով, լուսաւոր գալիքը։
Սուրբ Ծննդեան Պատարագի այս սրբազան պահին Հայրապետական Մեր խօսքն ենք յղում խրոխտ ու անվեհեր Արցախի հաւատաւոր Մեր զաւակներին։ Սիրելի արցախցիներ, մեր ժողովրդի մտածումներն ու հայեացքները այս օրերին առաւելաբար ձեզ են ուղղուած։ Դուք, որ դժուարութիւնների առջեւ երբեք չէք ընկրկել ու չէք նահանջել, այսօր էլ տոկունութեամբ շարունակում էք հերոսաբար պայքարել յանուն ձեր ազատ ու անկախ կեանքի, յանուն պատմական արդարութեան վերականգնման։ Ձեր քաջ նախնեաց փառաւոր օրինակով հաստատուն ու աննկուն մնացէք հայրենի հողում ապրելու եւ արարելու վճռականութեան մէջ: Մեր Սուրբ Եկեղեցին աշխարհասփիւռ իր թեմերով ձեզ հետ է, աջակից ու զօրակից ձեզ։ Ձեր հիմնարար իրաւունքների պաշտպանութեան արդար պահանջը յաղթանակելու է համայն հայութեան ջանքերով եւ միջազգային հանրութեան սատարումով։ Հաւատում ենք, որ Աստծոյ ողորմածութեամբ մեր ժողովուրդը իրեն պատած խաւարի մէջ պիտի լոյս ծագեցնի եւ դիմագրաւի իր կեանքում ծառացած լրջագոյն մարտահրաւէրներին։
Այս զգացումներով ու մտածումներով, Սուրբ Ծննդեան աւետիսով Մեր ողջոյնն ենք յղում մեր Սուրբ Եկեղեցու Նուիրապետական Աթոռների գահակալներին՝ Ն.Ս.Օ.Տ.Տ. Արամ Ա Մեծի Տանն Կիլիկիոյ Կաթողիկոսին, Երուսաղէմի Հայոց Պատրիարք Ամենապատիւ Տ. Նուրհան արքեպիսկոպոս Մանուկեանին, Կոստանդնուպոլսի Հայոց Պատրիարք Ամենապատիւ Տ. Սահակ արքեպիսկոպոս Մաշալեանին՝ մաղթելով Աստծոյ զօրակցութիւնը տէրունաւանդ ծառայութեան մէջ։ Ի Քրիստոս եղբայրական սիրով ողջունում ենք քոյր Եկեղեցիների Պետերին՝ հայցելով մանկացեալ Փրկչի օրհնութիւնը իրենց աստուածապատուէր առաքելութեանը եւ հաւատաւոր հօտին։ Հայրապետական Մեր սէրն ու բարեմաղթանքներն ենք յղում մեր Սուրբ Եկեղեցու ողջ հոգեւոր դասին եւ համայն հաւատաւոր Մեր ժողովրդին ի հայրենիս եւ ի սփիւռս։
Սուրբ Ծննդեան այս շնորհազարդ առաւօտ սրտագին աղօթքով խնդրում ենք Ամենակալ Տիրոջը, որ բեթղեհեմեան աստղալոյսը յարատեւ շողարձակի մեր ազգային կեանքի երկնակամարում, որպէսզի մենք, Փրկչին ապաւինած, հաստատենք մեր ընթացքը սիրոյ, համերաշխութեան ու միասնականութեան շաւիղներում։ Թող Սուրբ Ծննդեան կենարար խորհրդով խաղաղութիւն լինի աշխարհին ու համայն մարդկութեանը։ Թող հաւատքով պայծառացած՝ աշխարհասփիւռ ազգս հայոց զօրացնի իր հայրենիքը՝ Հայաստանն ու Արցախը, իրականութիւն դարձնի իր նուիրական իղձերը եւ փառաւորի մարդեղացեալ Փրկչին՝ գոհութեամբ ձայնելով.
