A Fulfilling Life of Service and Faith

A Fulfilling Life of Service and Faith

New York’s St. Vartan Cathedral was filled with worshippers on Saturday, September 10, for a special memorial service for the late Dr. Raffy Hovanessian: a departed leader of the worldwide Armenian community, and devoted servant of the Eastern Diocese and Fund for Armenian Relief.

Dr. Hovanessian passed away in late May of 2020, but the pandemic and its after-effects had precluded a suitable memorial event until this time. While the occasion was a solemn one, it had the character of a celebration of a remarkable life. Dr. Hovanessian was remembered for his lifetime vocation as a physician and healer; as a humanitarian and patriot; as a friend to countless people, and a benefactor to all Armenians. Above all, the memorial paid tribute to the deep Christian faith that motivated every aspect of Raffy’s life.

Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Archbishop Anoushavan Tanielian, and Bishop Daniel Findikyan officiated over the opening requiem service, with Archbishop Barsamian delivering a spiritual message.

Mr. Alex Yemenidjian was a dignified master of ceremonies, recalling his own warm relationship with his departed cousin Raffy, and introducing the speakers—Dr. Reuben Siraganian, Rev. Zaven Khanjian, Dr. Ara Tekian, Dr. John Deirmenjian, and Dr. Paul Paik—each of whom reflected on a specific aspect of Raffy’s life. All of the speakers shared touching remembrances of their departed friend and relative, and offered formal respects to Raffy’s wife, Shoghag, and the large Hovanessian family.

An especially heartwarming presentation came from Raffy and Shoghag’s children—Dr. Armen Hovanessian, Ani Hovanessian, and Aileen Agopian—followed by their eldest grandson Ara Kasparian, who shared the pearls of wisdom Raffy had bestowed on his loved ones over his lifetime.

Interspersed throughout the program were video segments of an interview with Raffy himself, filmed in 2014, in which he recounted his early years; spoke tenderly about his family, friends, and faith; and described the humane philosophy that had guided his journey through life.

A reception in the elegantly appointed Haik and Alice Kavookjian Auditorium gave attendees the long-awaited opportunity to pay their respects and gather together in friendship.

The memorial service was broadcast over the Internet, and the recording can be viewed by clicking here. Click the following link for a gallery of photos from the service and the gathering that followed.
