Bishop Mesrop Parsamyan mourned the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis in a message to the faithful of the Eastern Diocese.
Known to many as “The Pope of Mercy,” His Holiness took great strides during his pontificate to advance inter-church relations. His recognition of the Armenian Genocide on its 100th anniversary, his 2016 visit to the Republic of Armenia (pictured above, left), and his brotherly relationship with His Holiness Karekin II, the Catholicos of All Armenians, served to strengthen the bonds between the Armenian and Roman Catholic churches. At the behest of Pope Francis, the 10th-century Armenian saint Gregory of Narek was recognized as a Doctor of the Church.
In his message to the Diocese, released shortly after news broke of the Pope’s passing, Bishop Mesrop expressed his high regard for the late Pope, and recalled their personal meeting in 2020 (above, right), when he experienced the spirit of affection and sympathy Pope Francis felt for the Armenian Church and people.

In Memoriam: His Holiness Pope Francis
Dear Faithful:
This morning, with the celebration of Christ’s resurrection still fresh in memory, the world received the sorrowful news of the passing of His Holiness Francis, of blessed memory, the late Pope of the Roman Catholic Church.
Pope Francis was a remarkable figure in so many ways—and a friend, certainly, to the Armenian Church and people. He was very gracious to the Catholicos of All Armenians, His Holiness Karekin II, during their meetings in Rome and in Armenia. Pope Francis’ personal example of humanity, tenderness, and love for people from every background and walk of life, were a beautiful witness to the life and ministry of our Lord Jesus.
I have always felt that His Holiness had a special connection to the faithful of the Armenian Church. Naturally, as a man of compassion, he had a tender sympathy for our people and the trials we have endured, throughout history and down to the present day. Indeed, I personally felt that sympathy when I was privileged to meet him in 2020.
Just as importantly, Pope Francis was an enthusiastic benefactor of our people, who openly expressed his admiration for our spiritual as well as cultural achievements. The distinction conferred during his pontificate on the great Armenian saint, Gregory of Narek, naming him as a Doctor of the Church, will never be forgotten by the Armenian faithful. Nor will the days of Pope Francis’ historic visit to Armenia itself, which touched the hearts of our countrymen.
More generally, the godly love Pope Francis inspired will forever be felt in the hearts of countless people throughout the world.
Today, I extended my deepest sympathies to our Catholic brothers and sisters, on behalf of the clergy and people of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America.
May our risen Lord illuminate the soul of Pope Francis, and watch over His humble servant in death as in life. May He ease the hearts of Pope Francis’ people, and grant them consolation in the days to come.

Սիրելի Հաւատացեալներ,
Այս առաւօտ, Տէր Յիսուսի յարութեան տօնը տակաւին թարմ մեր յիշողութեան մէջ, աշխարհը լսեց Հռոմէական Կաթողիկէ Եկեղեցւոյ Պապ Նորին Սրբութիւն Փրանկիսկոսի մահուան գոյժը:
Փրանկիսկոս Քահանայապետը ակնառու անձնաւորութիւն մըն էր բազմադիմի տիտղոսներով—եւ մանաւանդ Հայ Եկեղեցւոյ հանդէպ իր տածած յատուկ բարեկամութեամբ:
Ազնիւ եւ շնորհալի էր Ն.Ս.Օ.Տ.Տ. Գարեգին Բ. Ամենայն Հայոց Կաթողիկոսին հանդէպ, Վեհափառ Հօր հետ հանդիպումներուն ընթացքին՝ Հռոմի եւ Հայաստանի մէջ: Փրանկիսկոս Պապին անձնական օրինակը մարդկայնութեան, գուրգուրանքի, եւ սիրոյ կեանքի ճանապարհներով քալող ամէն մարդոց հանդէպ գեղեցիկ վկայութիւն է Տէր Յիսուսի կեանքին եւ քարոզութեան:
Միշտ զգացած եմ Նորին Սրբութեան յատուկ կապը Հայ Եկեղեցւոյ հաւատացեալներուն հանդէպ: Բնական է, որ իբրեւ ողորմածութեան տիպար՝ ան միշտ յայտնեց իր կարեկցութիւնը մեր ժողովուրդին կրած տաժանագին վտանգներուն, ոչ միայն պատմութեան ընթացքին՝ այլ նաեւ մեր օրերուն: Արդարեւ, ես անձնապէս զգացի այդ ջերմութիւնը երբ մենաշնորհն ունեցայ անձնապէս այցելելու անոր 2020-ին:
Կարեւոր է յիշել որ Փրանկիսկոս Պապը խանդավառ բարեգործութիւն ցուցաբերած է մեր ժողովուրդին հանդէպ, եւ առանց վարանումներու յայտնած է իր հիացումը մեր հոգեւոր եւ մշակութային բարձրութիւններուն: Հայ հաւատացեալները երբեք պիտի չմոռնան, որ անոր քահանայապետութեան շրջանին հայոց մեծագոյն սուրբերէն ՝ Գրիգոր Նարեկացին՝ հռչակուեցաւ Տիեզերական Եկեղեցւոյ Վարդապետ: Պիտի չմոռնան նաեւ Փրանկիսկոսի պատմական այցելութիւնը Հայաստան, որ ջերմացուց մեր հայրենակիցներուն հոգիները:
Փրանկիսկոս Պապին աստուածային սիրոյ օրինակը միշտ պիտի ներշնչէ անհամար մարդոց հոգիները ամբողջ աշխարհի մէջ:
