During a requiem service for the fallen heroes of the 2020 Artsakh war on November 9, His Holiness Karekin II marked the anniversary of the ceasefire by calling for unity and common purpose among Armenian Christians around the world.
“The current difficult situation makes it imperative that all the children of our people—all of our authorities, and social and political structures—should unite around the highest national interests: to create a healthy atmosphere of national solidarity, trust, and committed cooperation, while addressing the country’s challenges through dialogue,” said the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, in a solemn service at St. Gayane Monastery. “Only in this way can we bind our wounds, and turn pain into strength.”

During the Requiem Service at Gayane Monastery: November 9, 2021
Dear Pious People:
Last year, our national life was shaken and disrupted by the tragic events of the large-scale war waged by Azerbaijan against the Artsakh Republic, with the support of Turkey and the involvement of terrorist groups. Since that time, the hearts of our people continue to grieve over the martyrdom of so many of our children, the loss of much of our homeland, and the grief and sorrow of new victims in the post-war period.
One year ago on this day, November 9, thanks to the efforts of the international community, principally the authorities of the Russian Federation, it was possible to halt Azerbaijan’s aggression, the consequences of which posed serious security, economic, and social challenges to our people.
The way to solve the problems now facing us is to alleviate the sorrow and disappointment that have befallen us. It is our sacred duty to face the severe trials of our time with dignity. As children of our homeland we must sustain our love and devotion for the homeland, uphold our national values, contribute to the progress of Armenia and Artsakh—and strengthen the solidarity of all our people around the world.
The current difficult situation makes it imperative that all the children of our people—all of our authorities, and social and political structures—should unite around the highest national interests: to create a healthy atmosphere of national solidarity, trust, and committed cooperation, while addressing the country’s challenges through dialogue. Only in this way can we bind our wounds, and turn pain into strength. To preserve the vitality of our nation we should implement patriotic initiatives and programs, create dignified living conditions in the homeland, encourage adoption, prevent emigration, keep the Diaspora strong and vibrant, revive our state through joint economic efforts, and pursue the development of science, education and culture.
Our Holy Church will continue its daily mission of salvation in Armenia, Artsakh, and our Diaspora communities, to strengthen faith and optimism for the future; to promote among our dioceses and pious children an abiding love for our homeland; to heal our country’s wounds, and strengthen a spirit of peace and brotherhood.
As the Apostle says: “Let us pursue what makes for peace and for the building up of one another” (Rom 14:19). Indeed, peace will be established in the homeland, and efforts to build a bright future will be fruitful, when hatred and intolerance are rejected from national life.
Today, the members of the Supreme Spiritual Council, the Congregation of the Mother See, and the faithful of the central shrine of all Armenians, the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, all unite in prayer for the peace and stability of our homeland, Armenia and Artsakh.
We pray to the Most High Lord for the heroes who fell in defense of the homeland: that God in His mercy may grant peace to their souls in the blissful precincts of heaven; that He will bring consolation to their bereaved families, and a speedy return of the captives and the missing.
We ask for the Lord’s help and His protective hand over our children living in the homeland and all over the world.
May the grace and blessing of the Lord be with our country and our people, now and always. Amen.

Անցյալ տարի հայրենական մեր կյանքը փոթորկվեց ու ցնցվեց Թուրքիայի աջակցությամբ և ահաբեկչական խմբավորումների ներգրավմամբ Ադրբեջանի կողմից Արցախի Հանրապետության դեմ սանձազերծված լայնամասշտաբ պատերազմի ողբերգական իրադարձություններով: Մեր բազում զավակների նահատակման, հայրենիքի զգալի մասի կորստի և հետպատերազմյան շրջանում նոր զոհերի ծանր ու վշտագին ցավը շարունակում է մորմոքել մեր ժողովրդի սիրտը:
Մեկ տարի առաջ այս օրը՝ նոյեմբերի 9-ին, միջազգային հանրության և ի մասնավորի Ռուսաստանի Դաշնության իշխանությունների ջանքերով հնարավոր եղավ կասեցնել ադրբեջանական ագրեսիան, որի հետևանքները անվտանգության, տնտեսական և սոցիալական խնդիրների լրջագույն մարտահրավերներ են ստեղծել մեր երկրի և ժողովրդի համար:
Մեր դեմ ծառացած հիմնախնդիրների լուծման ճանապարհը մեզ պատուհասած վշտի ու հուսախաբության թոթափումն է։ Մեր սրբազան պարտքն է ծանրագույն այս փորձությունները դիմագրավել արժանապատվությամբ՝ հաստատուն պահելով մեր ժողովրդի զավակների սերն ու նվիրումը հայրենիքի, հոգևոր ու ազգային արժեքների նկատմամբ, նպաստելով Հայաստանի ու Արցախի առաջընթացին, զորացնելով աշխարհասփյուռ մեր ժողովրդի միասնականության նախանձախնդրությունը։ Ներկա բարդագույն իրավիճակը հրամայականն է բերում մեր ժողովրդի բոլոր զավակներին, իշխանություններին, հասարակական-քաղաքական կառույցներին՝ միաբանվել ազգային-պետական գերագույն շահերի շուրջ, ձևավորել ներազգային համերաշխության և վստահության առողջ մթնոլորտ՝ հանձնառու գործակցությամբ և երկխոսության ճանապարհով հետամուտ լինելու երկրի առջև հառնած մարտահրավերների բարվոք լուծմանը: Այդպես միայն մենք կարող ենք ուղղել մեր կորացած մեջքը, ցավը վերափոխել ուժի, հայրենաշեն նախաձեռնություններ ու ծրագրեր իրագործելով պահպանել մեր ազգի կենսունակությունը, հայրենիքում արժանապատիվ կյանքի պայմաններ ստեղծելով խրախուսել որդեծնությունը, կանխել արտագաղթը, զորացյալ ու կենսունակ պահել սփյուռքը, վերազարթոնք բերել մեր պետությանը` համատեղ ջանքեր ներդնելով տնտեսության, գիտության, կրթության ու մշակույթի զարգացման գործում։
Մեր Սուրբ Եկեղեցին ամենօրյա իր փրկարար առաքելության մեջ շարունակելու է Հայաստանում, Արցախում և սփյուռքի համայնքներում զորացնել հայորդյաց հավատն ու ապագայահայաց լավատեսական ոգին, սերն ու նվիրումը առ հայրենին՝ աշխարհասփյուռ թեմերով ու բարեպաշտ իր զավակներով նաև զորակցություն բերելով մեր երկրի վերքերի ամոքմանը, առկա ճգնաժամի հաղթահարմանը, ներհասարակական կյանքում խաղաղության և եղբայրսիրության զորացմանը: «Հետամուտ լինենք խաղաղության և շինության` միմյանց հանդեպ»,- պատգամում է առաքյալը (Հռ. 14.19)։ Հիրավի, հայրենական անդաստանում հաստատուն կլինի խաղաղությունը և արդյունավոր՝ ջանքերը լուսավոր գալիքի կերտման, երբ ազգային կյանքից մերժվեն ատելությունն ու անհանդուրժողականությունը։
Այսօր համայն հայության հոգևոր կենտրոն Սուրբ Էջմիածնից Գերագույն Հոգևոր Խորհրդի անդամների, Մայր Աթոռի միաբանության, հավատավոր մեր ժողովրդի հետ միասնաբար աղոթք ենք բարձրացնում Հայաստան, Արցախ մեր հայրենիքի խաղաղության ու անսասանության համար։ Աղոթում ենք առ Բարձրյալ Տերը հանուն հայրենյաց պաշտպանության զոհված քաջորդիների համար, որ Ողորմածն Աստված երկնային երանական հարկերում հանգստություն պարգևի նրանց հոգիներին և մխիթարություն՝ սգավոր ընտանիքներին, շուտափույթ վերադարձ գերյալներին և անհայտ կորածներին: Հայցում ենք Տիրոջ օգնականությունն ու Սուրբ Աջի հովանին հայրենաբնակ և աշխարհասփյուռ Մեր զավակներին:
Թող Տիրոջ շնորհն ու օրհնությունը լինեն մեր երկրի ու մեր ժողովրդի հետ, այժմ և հավիտյանս. ամեն։
