Diocesan Council Meets in Boston to Advance “Renewed in Hope” Vision

Under the leadership of Diocesan Primate Bishop Mesrop Parsamyan, the Diocesan Council gathered for its monthly meeting on October 22–23, at Holy Trinity Church of Cambridge, MA.

The two-day meeting brought together Diocesan Council members and Diocesan leaders for discussions focused on strengthening the spiritual, administrative, and financial foundations of the Diocese, supporting parish communities, and advancing the church’s mission for the years ahead.

A focus of the gathering was Bishop Mesrop’s “Renewed in Hope vision, introduced at the 2026 Diocesan Assembly, which seeks to revitalize the spiritual life of the Diocese and inspire greater engagement in the life and mission of the Armenian Church in America. Council members discussed how this vision can be translated into meaningful initiatives at the parish level, to strengthen the connection between Diocesan leadership and local communities.

Emphasizing the importance of moving from vision to action, Bishop Mesrop said: “We can have a beautiful strategic plan with inspiring initiatives, but if we do not have the structure, sufficient resources, people, and clear responsibilities, even the best plan will remain just a plan.”

The Primate stressed that the Diocese’s ultimate mission is to strengthen its parishes, equip clergy and lay leaders, and provide the resources necessary for vibrant and sustainable ministries.

Diocesan Council Chair Richard Papalian echoed the importance of strengthening the Diocese’s organizational capacity, particularly through developing future leaders and drawing on the talents of the wider Armenian community. He emphasized the need to engage younger generations, empower capable individuals, and create opportunities for experienced and emerging leaders to work together.

The Council also explored plans for a “Department of Parish Growth,” envisioned as a resource to help parishes address their evolving needs, strengthen their ministries, and develop new opportunities for community engagement and growth.

Throughout the meeting, Bishop Mesrop and Diocesan leaders gave updates on significant developments affecting the Armenian Church, ongoing Diocesan initiatives, and priorities for the future. Reports from the Vicar, Executive Director, Director of Ministries, and Treasurer gave an overview of the Diocese’s current activities, staffing needs, financial position, and organizational challenges.

Strengthening Operations, Reviewing Structures

Particular attention was given to strengthening Diocesan operations, reviewing staffing structures, enhancing financial stewardship, and ensuring that Diocesan resources are effectively directed toward supporting parishes and ministries.

The Council reviewed progress on several major infrastructure initiatives, including the renovation of St. Vartan Cathedral and its fundraising efforts, plans concerning the Diocesan Center’s administrative building, and preparations related to the cathedral’s reconsecration, slated for 2028.

Additionally, discussion touched on Diocesan policies, parish assessments and delegate representation, support for St. Nersess Seminary, and various initiatives aimed at improving communication, participation, and collaboration throughout the Diocese.

Looking ahead, the Council considered plans for the 2027 Diocesan Assembly, to be hosted in Providence, RI, by the city’s Sts. Sahag and Mesrob church. These plans include opportunities to encourage meaningful dialogue, to strengthen participation, and to address important issues facing the church.

The gathering reflected the Council’s commitment to responsible stewardship, thoughtful planning, and collaborative leadership, with a shared emphasis on strengthening the Diocese by equipping its parishes to carry out the mission of the Armenian Church.

At the conclusion of the gathering, Bishop Mesrop expressed his heartfelt thanks to the host parish pastor, Fr. Vasken Kouzouian, and the leadership of Holy Trinity Church, for graciously welcoming and hosting the Diocesan Council.

“This parish’s hospitality and dedication are a beautiful expression of the spirit of service and fellowship that unites the faithful throughout the Diocese,” the Primate said.

The meeting concluded in prayer, reaffirming the Council’s shared commitment to serving Christ and His Church, strengthening the bonds of the Diocesan family, and moving forward together with renewed faith, purpose, and hope.
