As previously announced, St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral in New York City will begin the next phase of a major transformation in September 2026, with a projected full re-opening in spring 2028.

The interior renovation of the nearly 60-year-old cathedral will necessitate relocating the cathedral’s regular Sunday services to a suitable sanctuary for the duration of construction.

With the start of construction still two months away, the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America has announced new information about the cathedral community’s service schedule during the construction period.

During the construction period—starting from September 13, 2026, until December 26, 2027—Sunday Divine Liturgy (Badarak) services will be relocated to the Roman Catholic Church of Our Saviour, located at 59 Park Avenue (at 38th Street), New York, NY 10016. Sunday Divine Liturgy will take place from 12:00 p.m. to approximately 1:45 p.m., followed by a Fellowship Hour lasting until 3:00 p.m.

The Eastern Diocese is pleased to be relocating services to a spacious, beautiful sanctuary situated within walking distance of St. Vartan Cathedral’s historic location at Second Avenue and 34th Street.

Throughout the construction period, Sunday School, youth programs, and other parish activities will continue in alternative spaces within the Diocesan complex and nearby locations. (Details will be forthcoming.)

While the cathedral is undergoing its transformation, the Diocese’s administrative, ministerial and professional staff will continue to operate in the Diocesan complex with no significant changes.

For nearly 60 years, St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral, the first Armenian cathedral built in the Western Hemisphere, has stood as a symbol of faith, resilience, and community. This next chapter in its life will ensure that it continues to inspire future generations—standing renewed at the heart of New York City.

The cathedral renovation project will include a full restoration of the cathedral’s interior, upgrades to building systems, enhancements to its event and gathering spaces, and the installation of a new pipe organ.

Further updates on the transformation, including plans for the re-opening and re-consecration of St. Vartan Cathedral, will be shared with Diocesan leaders and with the public in the months ahead.
