Diocesan Primate Bishop Mesrop Parsamyan visited St. Sahag and St. Mesrob Church in Wynnewood, PA, from September 19 through 21, to join the community as it celebrated the centennial of its founding.
The festivities marked 100 years since the signing of the original charter that formally established an Armenian parish in West Philadelphia. The actual signing took place on October 8, 1924; but the centennial celebration went forward 101 years later to allow for the renovation of the sanctuary. That process was completed earlier this year.
The final act in the renovation—the reconsecration of St. Sahag and St. Mesrob Church altar—was the inaugural event of the centennial weekend. On Friday afternoon, September 19, Bishop Mesrop led the ceremony.
“It was a truly moving and mystical way to begin this extraordinary centennial weekend,” the Primate said.
The church’s magnificent Italian marble altar, installed in the early 1970s, was anointed anew with holy muron. Bishop Mesrop anointed the top and front of the altar, while two distinguished former pastors of the parish—Archbishop Haigazoun Najarian, the emeritus Primate of Australia, and Bishop Oshagan Gulgulian, the current Primate of Iraq—anointed the right and left corners.
At the parish’s invitation, the two former pastors had graciously returned to Wynnewood to take part in the reconsecration and subsequent centennial events.
To conclude the service, 13 candles—representing Jesus and His apostles—were lit atop the otherwise bare altar.
“There was a hush among the congregation as I lit the first candle on the altar,” recalled Bishop Mesrop. “From that flame, we kindled the other 12 candles, filling the sanctuary with a warm light: the sign of Christ’s presence dwelling among His people. It was a moment of deep gratitude, joy, and renewal for this faithful parish family.”
Parish pastor Fr. Armash Bagdasarian assisted the Primate and bishops throughout the service. In addition, Diocesan Vicar Fr. Simeon Odabashian, and Fr. Voskan Hovhannisyan (the newly installed pastor of St. Mary Church in Livingston, NJ), had travelled to Wynnewood to honor the occasion. A festive dinner in the church hall followed the service.
Episcopal Liturgy and Celebratory Banquet
Saturday’s events included a breakfast meeting of Bishop Mesrop and parish youth; a luncheon with the parish council; a trip into Philadelphia to view the latest progress on the ambitious Armenian Heritage Walk, currently under construction at the Philadelphia Art Museum; and a delightful dinner gathering of parish leaders at the home of longtime church members Robert and Nanette Zakian.
On Sunday, a splendid Episcopal Divine Liturgy united the three visiting bishops, Fr. Armash, and a large crowd of worshippers in grateful prayer to the Lord. On the altar, church’s long-serving Deacon Steve Keytanjian was joined by visiting deacons Levon Altiparmakian and Armen Terjimanian.
Members of the Diocesan Gomidas Choir, under the direction of Maestro Kris Kalfyan, had travelled to Philadelphia for the weekend, and brought the sacred hymns to magnificent life, along with the singers of the parish’s own Tarkmanchats Choir.
As celebrant of the badarak, Bishop Mesrop’s sermon reflected on the parish’s centennial milestone, the liturgical season of the Holy Cross, as well as the 34th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Armenia, which coincided with the day.
Afterwards, parishioners and guests adjourned to the church hall for a glorious centennial banquet. A rich and engaging program was led by Master of Ceremonies Vicken Bazarbashian, who introduced the speakers and performers of the day.
These included a toast offered by Alice Gurenlian Lachewitz (granddaughter of one of the original charter signers); Angela Kodokian and Kris Kalfayan leading the American and Armenian national anthems; words of welcome from parish council chair Julyet Degirmenci; music specially composed for the occasion by Centennial Committee co-chair George Kodokian; a soulful musical interlude by Maria Yacoubian on the qanon and Kevork Keshishian on the duduk; and reflections on distinct eras of parish history by Robert Zakian, Tamar Fumento (daughter of the late pastor Fr. Paree Metjian), and Alexis Dewees.
Keynote speaker Christopher Hagop Zakian—a Wynnewood native and the longstanding communications director of the Eastern Diocese—recalled his upbringing in the community and the people who had influenced him, and offered his perspective on the durability of the Wynnewood church and the Armenian Christian heritage.
Honors and Gratitude
The program included the screening of a short documentary on the early history of St. Sahag and St. Mesrob Church, prepared by Raffi Berberian and the parish Archives Committee. The Archives Committee also contributed historical research and photos to the lovely and informative commemorative booklet.
The Primate and Fr. Armash presented special certificates of commendation to longtime community leaders, including Laraine Kazanjian Ballard, Steve Barsamian, Robert Cannuscio, Julyet Degirmenci, Dn. Steve Keytanjian, George Kodokian, Lisa Manookian, Yn. Angel Metjian, Alex Topakbashian, Aris Topakbashian, Robin Williams, and Robert Zakian.
As the banquet drew to a close, Fr. Armash gave his own gracious remarks, thanking the parishioners, the centennial and renovation committees, and all who contributed to the weekend. Archbishop Haigazoun Najarian offered congratulations to his former congregation, and praised Fr. Armash’s pastoral leadership.
Bishop Mesrop concluded the three-day celebration with his blessing. “I offer my heartfelt thanks to you all,” he said, “for organizing this milestone event with such care and devotion. Your dedication and love have been visible in every detail. Even after 100 years, remember that this is only the beginning. Exciting days filled with faith, fellowship, and renewal lie ahead for the faithful of St. Sahag and St. Mesrob Church—and for all of us.”

Դարադարձի Երրօրեայ Հանդիսութիւններու Ամփոփ Տեղեկատու
2025 Սեպտեմբեր 19-21, Երրօրեայ հանդիսութիւններով հարուստ շաբաթավերջ մը վայելեցին Ֆիլատելֆիոյ Ս․ Սահակ եւ Ս․ Մեսրոպ Եկեղեցւոյ անդամներն ու բարեպաշտ հաւատացեալ ժողովուրդը։
Ուրբաթ՝ Սեպտեմբեր 19-էն սկսեալ բոլոր հանդիսութիւններուն իր օրհնաբեր ներկայութիւնը կը բերէր Արեւելեան թեմի Առաջնորդ Սրբազան Հայր՝ Գերշ․ Տ․ Մեսրոպ Եպս․ Պարսամեանը։ Վերանորոգուած եկեղեցւոյ խորանի օծումով սկսաւ արարողութիւնը։ Շարականներու երգեցողութեամբ հոգեւորականներու եւ դպիրներու թափօրը ուղուեցաւ դէպի սուրբ խորան։ Սաղմոսներու երգեցողութեան հետ հոգեւորականները «լուացին» խորանը ջուրով եւ գինիով՝ սրբազան խորհուրդի առ ի պատրաստութիւն ։
Ապա Սրբազան Հայրը սուրբ Միւռոնով օծեց խորանի վերի եւ առջեւի մասը, մինչ այդ՝ Ս․ Սահակ եւ Ս․Մեսրոպ եկեղեցւոյ նախկին սիրուած հովիւներէն Բարձր․ Հայկազուն Արք․ Նաճարեանը եւ Գեր․ Օշական Եպս․ Կիւլկիւլեանը՝ օծեցին խորանին աջ եւ ձախ անկիւնները։
Վերջապէս, խորանին առաջին մոմը վառեց Առաջնոռդ Հայրը, եւ այդ մոմին լոյսովը վառեցին բոլոր միւս 12 մոմերը՝ եկեղեցին ողողելով մոմերու լոյսով՝ ի նշան Իր ժողովրդի մէջ բնակուող Քրիստոսի ներկայութեան։
Ծուխին համայն ընտանիքին համար երախտագիտութեան, ուրախութեան եւ վերանորոգման պահ էր, որուն համար բոլորին սրտանց շնորհակալական զգացումը ուղղուած էր Արժ․ Տէր Արմաշ Քհնյ․ Պաղտասարեանին, ծխական խորհուրդին եւ Շինարարութեան Յանձնախումբին եկեղեցւոյ այդքան գեղեցիկ վերանորոգման համար։ Առաջնորդ Սրբազանը իր շնորհակալութիւնը յայտնեց բոլորին, նաեւ 100-ամեակի յանձնախումբին՝ իր հովուական այցը մանրամասն հոգատարութեամբ կազմակերպելու համար։
Ուրբաթ օրուայ խորանի օծումի արարողութեան յաջորդեց հիւրասիրութիւնը։ Երեկոն կը վայելէր օրհնաբեր ներկայութիւնը Առաջնորդ Սրբազան հօր կողքին շարք մը հոգեւոր հայրերու։ Եկեղեցւոյս հոգեւոր հովիւ Արժ․ Տ․ Արմաշ Քհնյ․ Պաղտասարեանի հրաւէրին ընդառաջած էին ծուխին նախկին հովիւներերէն Բարձ․ Տ․ Հայկազուն Արք․ Նաճարեան (2002-2007), ինչպէս նաեւ (2009-2022) Գերշ. Տ. Օշական Եպս. Կիւլկիւլեան-այժմու առաջնորդը Իրաքի Հայոց։
Ներկայ էին նաեւ Ս․ Վարդան Տաճարի լուսարարապետ՝ Հոգշ․ Տ․ Սիմէոն Վրդ․ Օտապաշեան, համայնքի այլ Հայ եկեղեցիներու հոգեւոր հայրեր, ինչպէս նաեւ Կրասնոտարի (Ռուսիա) հայ համայնքէն Ս․ Սահակ-Ս․ Մեսրոպ եկեղեցւոյ ծառայած Արժ․ Տ․ Դանիէլ Քուքուեան։
Կիրակի՝ Սեպտեմբեր 21, 2025-ին, կիրակնօրեայ հոգեպարար արարողութեան պատարագիչն էր Առաջնորդ Սրբազան Հայրը։ Առաջնորդ Սրբազան Հայրը սրտէ բխած իր պատգամով շնորհաւորեց այս եկեղեցւոյ Հովիւ Տէր Արմաշը, դարադարձի տօնախմբութեան հետ կապ ունեցող մէն մի անդամը, ինչպէս նաեւ եկեղեցին բերնէ բերան լեցնող հաւատացեալները։ Միաժամանակ իր օրուան քարոզին մէջ անդրադարձաւ Հայաստանի անկախութեան 34-րդ տարեդարձին։ Սրբազանը անդրադարձաւ թէ ինչպէս ինը դար մեր անկախութիւնը կորսնցնելէ ետք, 1915-ի ցեղասպանութիւնը, եւ բազում այլ մարտահրաւէրներու հանդիման ըլալով, պայքարելու ընթացքին մենք խաչը հաւատքով կրեցինք եւ վերջապէս ունեցանք Ազատ Անկախ Հայաստան մը։
Կիրակնօրեայ հոգեպարար պատարագի արարողութան յաջորդեց փառահեղ հիւրասիրութիւն յատուկ յայտագրով։ Հաւատացեալները ուղղուեցան եկեղեցւոյ մեծ սրահը, ուր շատ ճաշակաւոր կերպով զարդարուած սեղանները կը սպասէին հիւրերուն։
Հարիւրամեակի Յանձնախումբի համա-ատենպետ Տիար Ճօրճ Գօտօգեանի օրուան համար հեղինակած երաժշտական յատուկ ձօնով մը սկսաւ հանդիսութիւնը, որուն յաջորդեց Ամերիկեան քայլերգը Անժելա Գօտօգեանի կատարմամբ, իսկ Հայաստանի օրհներգը Քրիս Գալֆայեանի առաջնորդութեամբ բոլոր ներկաները միացան երգելու ի պատիւ Սփիւռքահայուն երազած Հայաստանի Անկախութեան 34-րդ տարեդարձին։
Ճոխ յայտագիր մը կը սպասուէր։ Յաջորդաբար ելոյթ ունեցան եկեղեցւոյ նախկին եւ ներկայ անդամներ, եկեղեցւոյ պատմականը կատարուեցաւ սահիկներու եւ շարժանկարային ցուցադրութեամբ- պատրաստութեամբը՝ Րաֆֆի Պէրպէրեանի, Հաճելի էր տեսնել Արխիւներու Յանձնախումբին ալ յիշատակումը օրուան յայտագրի գրքոյկին մէջ, ինչպէս նաեւ Րաֆֆիին պատրաստած հիանալի տեսերիզին մէջ:
Երաժտական ելոյթով հանդէս եկան քանոնահար Մարիա Եագուպեան եւ դուդուկահար Գէորգ Քէշիշեան։
Օրուան գլխաւոր բանախօսն էր Առաջնորդարանի հաղորդակցութեան վարիչ Ֆիլատելֆիոյ իրաւ քաղաքացի, Նիւ Եորքի Ս․ Վարդան Տաճարէն ներս տասնամեակներով ծառայող -Տեղեկատու կեդրոնի պատասխանատու՝ Տիար Քրիս Յակոբ Զաքեանը, որուն յուշապատումները շատ յուզիչ էին, երբ գուրգուրանքով պատմեց իր պատանութեան օրերէն զանազան անքակտելի եւ անմոռանալի յուշեր։
Այս առթիւ Առաջնորդ Սրբազան Հօր ձեռամբ եկեղեցւոյ ժրաջան անդամներ ստացան յատուկ շնորհաւորագրեր։ Առաջնորդ Հօր հետ ջերմօրէն կը շնորհաւորենք ՝ ներկաներէն՝ Տիարք Սթիվ Պարսամեանը, Ռոպէրթ Զաքեանը, Ճօրճ Գօտօգեանը, Սթիվըն Քեյթանճեանը, Ալէքս Թօփաքպաշեանը, Երէցկին Անժէլ Մեթճեանը, Տիկին Ժիւլիէթ Տեկիրմէնճին եւ Օրդ․ Լիզա Մանուկեանը։
Հուսկ ապա իր գնահատանքի ու երախտագիտութեան խօսքով ելոյթ ունեցաւ Հոգեւոր հովիւ Արժ․ Տ․ Արմաշ Պաղտասարեանը, իրեն միացաւ Բարձրաշնորհ Տ․ Հայկազուն Արք․ Նաճարեանը միաժամանկ ցուցաբերելով իր գնահատանքը, Տէր Արմաշին յանձնեց Հայրենի յուշանուէրներ առ ի գնահատանք եկեղեցւոյ դարադարձին առթիւ Տէր Հօր կատարած հսկայական աշխատանքին։
Հանդիսութիւնը իր աւարտին հասաւ Առաջնորդ հօր պահպանիչով։
Բարի երթ դարձեալ, Ս․Սահակ եւ Ս․ Մեսրոպի անունները կրող Հայաստանեայց Առաքելական այս Եկեղեցիին՝ իր Դարադարձին առթիւ- մաղթելով եւ յուսալով որ, մինչ երկրորդ դարադարձը նոր սերունդը նոյն ոգիով եւ հաւատքով տէր պիտի կանգնի մեր հաւատքին ու մշակոյթին, ինչպէս նաեւ պիտի շարունակէ աւանդը միշտ վառ պահելով Լուսաւորչի ջահը։
