A Statement on Behalf of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America
We are issuing this statement in our capacities as the Primate and Diocesan Council of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America, regarding the extraordinarily troubling situation currently confronting our homeland.
The Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia has publicly announced plans to recruit candidates and establish a commission aimed at replacing the Catholicos of All Armenians—an unprecedented attempt to assert control over the Armenian Apostolic Church. This action stands in direct violation of Armenia’s Constitution, international treaty obligations, and, more profoundly, the foundational principles that have bound Armenians together across centuries and continents.
The Armenian Church is the oldest and most enduring national institution of the Armenian people. For more than 1,700 years, she has stood as the cornerstone of our national identity, governing herself in accordance with sacred tradition, Apostolic succession, and canonical order. Through centuries of foreign domination and political upheaval, the Church remained autonomous, not led by kings or governments, but guided by the divine authority entrusted to her by Christ, and passed down through generations of Catholicoi and saints.
Today, the Catholicos of All Armenians is not merely the spiritual leader of a single republic, but of a worldwide Armenian Apostolic Church. His Holiness Karekin II bears a sacred responsibility that transcends political borders. The Armenian Church belongs to all Armenians—whether in Yerevan, Los Angeles, New York, Beirut, Paris, or Buenos Aires.
We unequivocally affirm and support the spiritual leadership of His Holiness Karekin II and the sovereignty of the Armenian Church in her governance. Any attempt to interfere in the Church’s internal affairs undermines not only the integrity of her ancient traditions, but also the unity of the Armenian nation.
We urge all officials, institutions, and individuals to refrain from using language that promotes hatred or division among our people. We also call on them to respect the independence of the Armenian Apostolic Church, and to honor the sacred role she holds as the spiritual mother of the Armenian nation.

Յայտարարութիւն Հայաստանեայց Եկեղեցւոյ Ամերիկայի Արեւելեան Թեմին
Այս Յայտարարութիւնը կը հրապարակենք ի դիմաց Հայաստանեայց Եկեղեցւոյ Ամերիկայի Արեւելեան Թեմին Առաջնորդին եւ Թեմական Խորհուրդին, ներկայիս մեր Հայրենիքը յուզող աննախադէպ վիճակին եւ հարցերուն վերաբերեալ:
Հայաստանի Հանրապետութեան Վարչապետը հրապարակային յայտարարութիւններով ետեւէ է կազմելու յանձնախումբ մը, որպէսզի փոխէ Ամենայն Հայոց Կաթողիկոսը–յիրաւի աննախադէպ փորձ՝ Հայ Առաքելական Եկեղեցին հսկողութեան տակ առնելու: Այս գործը աներկբայօրէն դէմ է ոչ միայն Հայաստանի Սահմանադրութեան, այլ նաեւ՝ միջազգային դաշինքներով յանձն առնուած պարտաւորութիւններու, բայց մանաւանդ դէմ է այն իրաւական սկզբունքներուն որոնք հիմերն են բոլոր հայ ժողովուրդին միութեան՝ դարերու ընթացքին եւ ամբողջ աշխարհի վրայ:
Հայ Եկեղեցին Հայ Ազգին ամէնէն հին եւ ամէնէն տեւողական հաստատութիւնն է: Աւելի քան 1700 տարի է որ ան կանգնած է որպէս մեր ազգային ինքնութեան հիմքը, ինքնավար՝ առաջնորդուած սրբազան աւանդութեան, Առաքելական յաջորդութեան, եւ կանոնական իրաւունքի սկզբունքներով: Դարեր շարունակ՝ օտար տիրապետութեան եւ քաղաքական ցնցումներու պայմաններուն տակ, Եկեղեցին մնացած է ինքնավար, առաջնորդուած ո՛չ թագաւորներու ոչ ալ կառավարութիւններու կամքով, այլ՝ Քրիստոսի իրեն վստահած աստուածային հեղինակութեամբ, Կաթողիկոսներու եւ սուրբերու սերունդէ սերունդ յաջորդութեամբ։
Այսօր Ամենայն Հայոց Կաթողիկոսը պարզապէս մէկ հանրապետութեան մը հոգեւոր առաջնորդը չէ, այլ՝ աշխարհաձիր ամբողջ հայ ժողովուրդին։ Նորին Սրբութիւն Տ.Տ. Գարեգին Բ. Կաթողիկոսը կ՛իրականացնէ եւ կը կրէ սուրբ աւանդ մը, եւ անոր պատասխանատուութիւնը կը գերազանցէ ամէն պետական սահման։ Հայ Եկեղեցին կը պատկանի բոլոր հայերուն՝ Երեւանի թէ Լոս Անճելոսի, Նիւ Եորքի թէ Պէյրութի, Փարիզի թէ Պուենոս Այրեսի։
Մենք աներկբայօրէն կը հաստատենք եւ կը զօրակցինք Նորին Սրբութեան՝ Գարեգին Բ. Կաթողիկոսի հոգեւոր առաջնորդութեան, ինչպէս նաեւ Եկեղեցւոյ ինքնիշխան կառավարման։ Որեւէ միջամտութիւն Հայ Եկեղեցւոյ ներքին գործերուն՝ կը վնասէ ոչ միայն անոր դարաւոր աւանդութիւններուն, այլ նաեւ՝ հայ ժողովուրդին միասնութեան։
Կոչ կ’ուղղենք բոլոր պաշտօնատարներուն, անհատներուն, եւ հաստատութիւններուն՝ ըլլալու զուսպ եւ չօգտագործելու մեր ժողովուրդին մէջ ատելութիւն եւ պառակտում տարածող խօսք: Կոչ կ’ուղղենք նաեւ, որ յարգեն Հայ Առաքելական Եկեղեցւոյ անկախութիւնը եւ պատուեն անոր սուրբ առաքելութիւնը որպէս հայ ազգին հոգեւոր մայրը։
