ACYOA Juniors Lenten Retreat in Midwest Region

Nearly 40 teens from Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois gathered for an inspiring two-day ACYOA Juniors Lenten Retreat hosted by St. John Armenian Church. Centered on the theme “Made in His Image,” the retreat provided a meaningful opportunity for young people to deepen their faith, form friendships, and reflect on what it means to be created in God’s image.

The retreat opened with a beautiful youth prayer led by Fr. Aren, followed by engaging and fun icebreakers led by Lisa Mardigian and Michael Ohanesian. By the end of the session, everyone knew each other’s names—setting the tone for a weekend of connection and spiritual growth. Participants then enjoyed a hearty dinner graciously provided by a generous St. John’s parishioner.

After a well-earned break filled with basketball, volleyball, and laughter, the teens gathered for a spiritually enriching Bible study led by Fr. Aren. The session included watching a short film clip and reflecting on thought-provoking questions provided in their Bible study handouts.

Continuing with the retreat’s theme, Der Hratch led a powerful discussion on how the invisible seal of the Holy Muron at our baptism is like God’s “tag” marking us as Made in His Image. The teens also viewed a short video on Baptism—a recent production by the Eastern Diocese—and reflected on the central role Baptism plays in our Christian identity.

Later that night, nearly at midnight, the teens participated in a moving Rest Service led by Fr. Aren and Der Hratch. Hayr Soorp welcomed the teens into the chancel, encouraged their active participation, and offered a heartfelt message that left a lasting impression. A group photo was taken to mark this special moment in their faith journey.

The next morning, after breakfast, the teens were eager to put their faith into action. To live out what it means to be “made in His image,” they welcomed Baron Harutioun (Harry Dulger), a dedicated volunteer with The Motor City Mitten Mission, who shared his journey and experiences preparing meals for the homeless. Inspired by his example, the teens lovingly prepared over 100 meal bags for those in need. All the supplies for this hands-on service project were generously sponsored by Fr. Aren. Click here to view photos.
