The Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America expresses deep concern over the recent actions of police in the Republic of Armenia, and the attitude of disrespect shown towards the Catholicos of All Armenian, His Holiness Catholicos Karekin II, and his entourage.
The incident occurred on May 28—the anniversary of the First Republic of Armenia and the 106th anniversary of the Battle of Sardarabad—as police officers impeded the Catholicos of All Armenians as he approached the Sardarabad memorial to pay his respects. This was an action without precedent in the modern history of the Republic of Armenia, and deserves the strongest disapproval.
It is a matter of historic record that in 1918, during the victory at Sardarabad, the Catholicos of All Armenians and the entire priestly class of that time played an indispensable role. Armenian clergy fought heroically with a cross in one hand and a weapon in the other throughout the battle.
Now, 106 years later, police officers of our independent Republic of Armenia not only failed to ensure the safety of the Catholicos of All Armenians, but what’s worse, tried to prevent the Catholicos and his entourage of clergy from ascending to the Sardarabad Memorial, to offer prayers in memory of our brave martyrs.
Armenia’s policing authorities should be ashamed at this incident. But we hope it will be an opportunity for them to review procedures and behavior shown towards all citizens—and especially towards the Armenian Church and the Catholicos of All Armenians—and to put in place policies that will preclude the repetition of such episodes.
We convey to the Catholicos of All Armenians our filial affection and solidarity, wishing him bright days and the support of God. May the Lord encourage prudence and wisdom to prevail in these trying times.

Դեպքը տեղի ունեցած է երեկ` Հայաստանի Առաջին Հանրապետութեան եւ Սարդարապատիհերոսամարտի 106-ամեակի յիշատակութեան նուրիկան օրը ըդդէմ Ամենայն Հայոց Հայրապետի։ ԱսիկաՀայաստանի Հանրապետութեան նորօրեա ողջ պատմութեան մէջ նախադէպը չունեցող եղկելի եւ խիստդատապարտելի դէպք մըն է:
Սարդարապատի հերոսամարտի հաջողութեան մեջ, Հայոց Հայրապետը եւ ողջ հոգեւոր դասըանփոխարինելի դերակատարում ունեցած են։ Հայ կղերականը մէկ ձեռքով խաչ, միւս ձեռքով զէնք բռնածկը մարտնչէին Սարդարապատի Հերոսամարտի ատեն:
106 տարի անց, Անկախ Հայաստանի Հանրապետութեան Ոստիկանութիւնը ոչ միայն չապահովէցԱմենայն Հայոց Հայրապետի անվտանգութիւնը, այլեւ ամօթալի ու հայ ոստիկանին անվայելուչ ձեւով երեքանգամ պատնէշ կազմելով, քաշկռտելով ՝ փորձ ըրած են արգիլել Ամենայն Հայոց Հայրապետի եւ անորշքախումբի վերելքը դէպի Սարդապարատի յուշահամալիր, ուր պետք է աղոթք մատուցանեին մեր քաջնահատակներու հիշատակին:
Այս դատապարտելի միջադեպը կը հուսանք որ առիթ կըլլայ Ոստիկանութեանը վերանայելու իրգործելակերպն ու վարմունքը հանդէպ պարզ քաղաքացիներու եւ հատկապես հանդեպ Հայ ԱռաքելականԵկղեցւոյ եւ Ամենայն Հայոց Հայրապետի՝ բացառելով նմանօրինակ քստմնելի միջադէպերու կրկնութիւնը:
Մեր որդիական սերը եւ զօրակցութիւնը կը յայտնենք Ամենայն Հայոց Հայրապետին՝ մաղթելով արեւշատօրեր եւ Բարձրեալի օգնականութիւնը։ Թող որ Տէրն Ամենակալ ողջամտութիւն եւ իմաստութիւն պարգեւէմեր ազգին այս դժուար եւ փորձութիւններով լեցուն ժամանակներու մեջ։
