In his New Year message to the worldwide faithful of the Armenian Church, His Holiness Karekin II welcomed 2024 with concern, but also hope. His message was transmitted in a special video released by the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin
The Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians recalled the prior twelve months as “a challenging year,” one “filled with the relentless pain of immense losses in our hearts.” Naturally, he cited the occupation and depopulation of Artsakh, and the severe repercussions being felt in Armenia, as paramount among the travails of 2023.
But in an expression of fatherly assurance, the Catholicos reflected that “whether in moments of joy or distress, our people have always relied on God, always drawn strength from the Most High, believing that God is with us.”
“We are heirs of a nation that has known pain and suffering, but has never surrendered,” he said. “We experienced the Genocide, but we were not destroyed; we were massacred, but we did not die.”
He exhorted the Armenian faithful to reach out with love to the displaced Armenians of Artsakh, and to show a unified conviction across the world and throughout the Armenian homeland to preserve and strengthen the Armenian identity.
“Now, dear ones, let us renew ourselves in spirit and mind; let us be strengthened with hope,” he said.

Dear Faithful in the Homeland and the Diaspora:
On this New Year’s Eve, from the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, we bring our pontifical love and best wishes to you all. The New Year is the borderline of the days that have become history and the hopeful future.
We welcome the year 2024 with deep concerns, filled with the relentless pain of immense losses in our hearts. We experienced a challenging year. But relying on the Lord, we look to the future of our nation with hope and optimism. In the face of the occupation and depopulation of Artsakh, the severe situation created around Armenia, and the existing problems, we must resolutely overcome these difficulties, keeping strong the dedication and love for our homeland and faith in our Almighty Lord.
Dearly beloved, whether in moments of joy or distress, our people have always relied on God, always drawn strength from the Most High, believing that God is with us. Undoubtedly, our people’s spiritual potential and strength of spirit will lead us to the revival and the triumphant resurgence of Armenian life.
We are heirs of a nation that has known pain and suffering, but has never surrendered. We experienced the Genocide, but we were not destroyed; we were massacred, but we did not die.
Certainly, the historical records are marked with beautiful testimonies of godliness and patriotism, with a ceaseless desire to live and create–and the record cannot be interrupted. Trials often happen in peoples’ lives; but those nations that remain resilient in spirit and have faith in God can bravely face every hardship and challenge. “The Lord is the hope of all those who trust in Him,” says the Psalmist (17:31).
Now, dear ones, let us renew ourselves in spirit and mind; let us be strengthened with hope, reflect on our progress and deeds with self-examination, correct our shortcomings and missteps. Let us not allow division or hatred to be sown in our national life, such that destructiveness and indifference will take root. Instead, let us live a life adorned with faith, with God-bestowed love for each other, so that we feel God’s gracious presence among us. Let us “build ourselves up on our most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, to keep ourselves in the love of God,” as the Apostle urges (Jude 1:20-21).
Let us be united in Armenia and the Diaspora, and use our collective efforts to protect national interests and create a new dawn in the life of our countrymen and our nation. Let us realize that the Motherland is the only sacred place where the prayers and dreams of Armenian generations of all times are stored, where the Armenian identity will continue to be formed, and from whose sacred land the Armenian people will continuously gain strength.
Let us surround our sisters and brothers forcibly displaced from Artsakh with caring love; let us increase hope in them so that the vision of returning to their native Artsakh never fades, and faith in God remains strong. Let us support the needy and distressed and seek the help of the Most High for our missing and captured ones and their families.
And following the message of the Holy Scripture, let us not forget charity and sharing the resources we have with each other, because such sacrifices please God (cf. Hebrews 13:16). This is the way to a pious and safe life for our people; this is the way towards the viability and permanence of our nation and state, nurtured with time-tested values.
Let us pray wholeheartedly, so that the Heavenly Lord keeps our homeland and the whole world in peace; so that with His support He will spread the grace of hope and love and the gift of victory to our homeland and to the lives of all Armenians passing through every danger, now and always. Amen.

Տարեմուտի այս երեկո Մայր Աթոռ ՍուրբԷջմիածնից Հայրապետական Մեր սերն ուբարեմաղթանքերն ենք բերում ամենքիդ։
Ամանորըսահմանագիծն է պատմություն դարձած օրերի ևհուսառատ գալիքի։
Փրկչական 2024 թվականը դիմավորում ենք խորմտահոգություններով, դիմավորում ենք ահռելիկորուստների անամոքելի ցավը մեր սրտում։ Ծանր տարի ապրեցինք, սակայն Տիրոջն ապավինած՝ հույսով ու լավատեսությամբ ենք նայում մեր ազգի ապագային։ Արցախի բռնազավթման և հայաթափման, Հայաստանի շուրջ ստեղծված լրջագույն իրավիճակով և առկա հիմնախնդիրներով հանդերձ՝ հաստատակամ պիտի հաղթահարենք դժվարությունները՝ ամուր պահելով նվիրումն ու սերը առ հայրենին և հավատը առ մեր Ամենակալ Տերը։
Սիրելիներ, ուրախության, թե նեղության պահերին մեր ժողովուրդը միշտ ապավինել է Աստծուն, միշտ ուժու զորություն առել Բարձրյալից՝ հավատքով, որ Աստված մեզ հետ է։ Անտարակույս, մեր ժողովրդի հոգևոր ներուժն ու ոգու ամրությունը մեզ պիտի առաջնորդեն վերհառնումի և հայոց կյանքի հաղթական վերընձյուղման։ Մենք ժառանգներն ենքմի ազգի, որ տառապել ու չարչարվել է, բայց չիհանձնվել, ցեղասպանվել է, բայց չի կործանվել,սրատվել է, բայց չի մահացել: Արդարև, չի կարողընդհատվել պատմությունը մի ժողովրդի, որիտարեգրությունը զարդարված էաստվածպաշտության և հայրենասիրության հրաշալիվկայություններով, ապրելու և արարելու անընդմիջելիտենչանքով:
Փորձությունները հաճախ են պատահում ժողովուրդների կյանքում, սակայն դժվարին իրավիճակներից հաղթանակած են դուրս գալիս այն ազգերը, որոնք աննկուն են մնում ոգով ու առ Աստված հավատքով և արիաբար դիմակայում նեղություններին ու մարտահրավերներին։ ,Տերը ապավենն է բոլոր նրանց, ովքեր հույսը դրել են Նրա վրաե,- ասում է սաղմոսերգուն (17.31)։
Արդ, սիրելիներ, նոր տարում նորոգվենք հոգով ու մտքով, զորանանք հույսով, ինքնաքննությամբ անդրադառնանք մեր ընթացքին ու գործերին, սրբագրենք թերացումներն ու սայթաքումները, թույլ չտանք, որ ազգային կյանքում սերմանվի ատելությունու պառակտում, արմատավորվի կործանարար հարմարվողականությունն ու անտարբերությունը։Ապրենք հավատքով զարդարուն կյանքով, միմյանցհանդեպ աստվածապատվեր սիրով, որպեսզի զգանք Աստծո շնորհաբեր ներկայությունը մեզանում։ ,Մեր անձերը կառուցենք հավատի սրբությամբ, աղոթենք Սուրբ Հոգով, պահենք մենք մեզ Աստծու սիրովե,-ինչպես հորդորում է առաքյալը (Հուդա 20-21)։ Միասնական լինենք Հայաստանում ու սփյուռքում և մեր համախումբ ջանքերը ծառայեցնենք հանունհամազգային շահերի պաշտպանության, հայրենյաց ու ազգի կյանքի նոր արշալույսի կերտման։
Գիտակցենք, որ հայրենիքը այն միակ սրբազան վայրն է, որտեղամբարված են բոլոր ժամանակների հայ սերունդներիաղոթքներն ու երազները, որտեղ շարունակ պիտիկերտվի հայոց ինքնությունը, և որի սրբազան հողից է հավետ ուժ առնելու հայ ժողովուրդը: Հոգածու սիրովշրջապատենք Արցախից բռնի տեղահանված մեր քույրերին ու եղբայրներին, նրանց մեջ առատացնենք հույսը, որ երբեք չմարի հայրենի Արցախ վերադարձիտեսիլքը, և զորեղ մնա հավատն առ Աստված։ Աջակից լինենք կարիքավորներին ու նեղյալներին և Բարձրյալի օգնականությունը հայցենք անհայտ կորած և գերյալ մեր զավակներին ու նրանց ընտանիքներին։
Սուրբգրական պատգամի համաձայն՝ չմոռանանք բարեգործությունը և մեր ունեցած բարիքներին միմյանց մասնակից դարձնելը, քանզի այդպիսի՛ պատարագներն են հաճելի Աստծուն (հմմտ. Եբր. 13.16), և այս է ճանապարհը մեր ժողովրդի բարեպաշտ ու ապահով կյանքի, այս է ճանապարհը դարավոր ու նվիրական արժեքներով մեր ազգի և պետության լինելիության ու հարատևության։
Սրտագինս աղոթենք, որ Երկնավոր Տերըխաղաղության մեջ պահի հայոց աշխարհը և ողջմարդկությանը, Իր զորակցությամբ հույսի ու սիրոշնորհները և հաղթության պարգևը սփռի վտանգների միջով անցնող մեր հայրենիքի ու համայն հայության կյանքին այսօր և միշտ և հավիտյան. ամեն:
