His Holiness Karekin II marked Armenia’s annual “Victory Day” on May 9, 2023, with a message reflecting on the painful realities of war and loss experienced by Armenians in the past three years.
Since the end of World War II–known as “The Great Patriotic War” among the former Soviet republics–Armenians in the homeland have observed May 9 as a day to remember the Soviet Union’s victory over the invading Nazi army. For the past 31 years, the day has also been an occasion when Armenians remember the heroic Liberation of Shushi in 1992 during the first Artsakh war, and the formal establishment of Artsakh’s armed forces.

Message of His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians
On Victory Day: May 9, 2023
“And this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.” (1 John 5:4)
My Dear Armenian People:
With fatherly love, I send you blessings and good wishes on this day, May 9, marking victory in the Second World War, and the liberation of Shushi.
These holidays have become a symbol for us the fight against violence and evil, of the purification of independent life on the motherland, and of the victory of the liberating spirit. Our Christian people have often been subjected to persecution and tribulations throughout history; but with our bright faith and vision of the future, we have emerged from trials and re-established our determination to create a decent, durable existence as a nation under God.
We are living through hard and difficult days today. Our people in blockaded Artsakh are subjected to daily harassment and humiliation. Threats to Armenia have not diminished; the borders are restless, full of enemy provocations and threats of attack. The challenges faced by our homeland of Armenia and Artsakh have united our souls with concern, brought anxiety to the children of our nation, both in the homeland and the diaspora.
In this painful situation, even when we have lost Shushi and Artsakh–a significant part of our historic patrimony; even when we have thousands of victims and wounded, many captivate and missing in action; even under these conditions we still celebrate this day: upholding the conviction that the spirit of our people is strong; our will to live and create unshakeable; our devotion to the motherland steadfast.
Dear Ones, May 9 is not only an appreciation of past victories, but an appointment of committed responsibility to build our future victories in faith and unity. “And this is the victory that overcomes the world—our faith,” the Apostle John affirms.
We believe in the divine power of our nation to turn defeat into victory, death into life, pain into joy. We also believe that we may deny ourselves fear and superstition, indifference and adaptability, with the confidence that godliness, patriotism, and dignity shall prevail and triumph in our national life.
Dear Armenian People: Let us live and act with this consciousness, and consider May 9 not only a significant anniversary of the Second World War, and of the historic liberation of Shushi during the heroic Artsakh war; but also as a mission, effort and will to create new victories and achievements. In order to meet the challenges ahead, it is our duty to stand united, and to strive, by all possible means, to strengthen our statehood, Artsakh’s sovereignty, and our national interests.
In this cause, may we remain empowered by faith, not discouraged and dismayed in the face of tribulation, keeping awake the same spirit of courage manifested by the heroic children of our nation during the Great Patriotic War and the days of Shushi’s liberation.
Let us pray together to our Heavenly Lord, asking him to bless our homeland: to keep Armenia and Artsakh under his protection, in peace and safety; to strengthen the hope and optimistic spirit in us–all for the love of our heritage and for a prosperous, bright future of our people.

«Եվ ա՛յս է այնհաղթությունը, որ հաղթում է աշխարհին՝մերհավատը» (Ա Հովհ. 5.4)։
Սիրելի ժողովուրդ Հայոց,
Հայրական սիրով բերում ենք ձեզ Մեր օրհնությունը և բարեմաղթանքները մայիսի 9-ի՝ Երկրորդ համաշխարհային պատերազմի հաղթանակի և Շուշիի ազատագրման նվիրական օրվա առիթով:
Այս տոները մեզ համար դարձել են խորհրդանիշը բռնության ու չարի դեմ պայքարի, հայրենի հողի վրա անկախ կյանք կերտելու մաքառումի և ազատատենչ ոգու հաղթության: Քրիստոնյա մեր ժողովուրդը պատմության ընթացքում հաճախ ենթարկվել է արհավիրքների ու նեղությունների, սակայն իր լուսավոր հավատքով ու գալիքի տեսիլքով վեր է հառնել փորձություններից և առ Աստված ապավինությամբ վերահաստատել իր վճռականությունը արժանապատիվ գոյության և հարատևության։
Ծանր և դժվարին օրեր ենք ապրում այսօր: Ամենօրյա բռնաճնշումների և նվաստացումների է ենթարկվում շրջափակման մեջ գտնվող Արցախի մեր ժողովուրդը: Նվազ չեն նաև Հայաստանի առջև հառնած սպառնալիքները, տակավին անհանգիստ են սահմանները, լեցուն՝թշնամու սադրանքներով ու հարձակումների վտանգներով: Հայաստան և Արցախ հայրենի մեր երկրի առջև ծառացած մարտահրավերները մտահոգություններով ու տագնապներով են համակել հոգիները մեր ժողովրդի զավակների՝ ինչպես հայրենիքում, այնպես և սփյուռքում:
Այս ցավալի իրավիճակում անգամ, երբ կորցրել ենք Շուշին և Արցախ աշխարհի զգալի հատվածը, երբ ունենք հազարավոր զոհեր ու վիրավորներ, բազում գերեվարվածներ ու անհայտ կորածներ, մենք նշում ենք այս օրը՝ համոզումով, որ ամուր և անսասան է մեր ժողովրդի ոգին,անկոտրում՝ ապրելու և արարելու կամքը, և հաստատուն՝ հայրենիքի հանդեպ նվիրումը։
Սիրելիներ, մայիսի 9-ը ոչ միայն արժևորումն է անցյալի հաղթությանց, այլև ամրագրումը հանձնառու պատասխանատվության՝ հավատքով և միասնականությամբ կերտելու մեր գալիք հաղթանակները։ «Եւ ա՛յս է այն հաղթությունը, որ հաղթում է աշխարհին՝ մեր հավատը»,- հաստատում է առաքյալը։
Մենք հավատում ենք մեր ժողովրդի աստվածատուր ուժին՝ պարտությունը վերածելու հաղթանակի, մահը՝ կյանքի, ցավը՝ ուրախության: Հավատում ենք նաև, որ կարող պիտի լինենք մերժել մեզանից վախն ու թերահավատությունը, անտարբերությունն ու հարմարվողականությունը՝ վստահությամբ, որ համազգային ու հայրենական կյանքում պիտի գերակայեն ու հաղթանակեն աստվածասիրությունը, հայրենասիրությունն ու արժանապատվությունը:
Արդ, սիրելի ժողովուրդ հայոց, ապրենք ու գործենք այս գիտակցությամբ և մայիսի 9-ը դիտարկենք ոչ միայն Երկրորդ աշխարհամարտի, արցախյան հերոսամարտի պատմական իրադարձությունների, Շուշիի ազատագրման նշանակալի թվական, այլ որպես առաքելություն, որպես ջանք և կամք՝ ուղղված նոր հաղթանակների ու ձեռքբերումների կերտմանը: Ծառացած մարտահրավերներին հանդիման՝ մեր պարտքն է լինել միասնական և բոլոր հնարավոր միջոցներով ջանքեր գործադրել հանուն մեր պետականության զորացման, Արցախի ինքնիշխանության ու շահերի պաշտպանության։ Հավատքով զորացյալ մնանք, չվհատվենք և չընկրկենք նեղությունների ու դժվարությունների առջև, արթուն պահենք քաջարի նույն ոգին, որ դրսևորվել է մեր ժողովրդի հերոս զավակների կողմից Հայրենական մեծ պատերազմում և Շուշիի ազատագրման օրերին։
Աղոթենք միասնաբար առ Երկնավոր մեր Տերը և հայցենք, որ օրհնի և Իր Սուրբ Աջի հովանու ներքո խաղաղ ու անվտանգ պահպանի Հայաստան և Արցախ հայրենի մեր երկիրը, զորացնի մեզանում հույսն ու լավատեսության ոգին՝ ի սեր հայրենյաց և մեր ժողովրդի բարօր ու լուսավոր գալիքի։
Շնորհք, սէր և խաղաղութիւն Տեառն մերոյ Յիսուսի Քրիստոսի եղիցին ընդ մեզ և ընդ ամենեսեան. ամեն։
