“I congratulate the 50th anniversary of this cathedral,” said Archbishop Khajag Barsamian in his message to worshippers who crowded every corner of New York’s St. Vartan Cathedral. “This is a place that has welcomed people from every walk of life, every background, who have come together here to pray, share our friendship, and learn the rich Christian heritage of the Armenian people.”
More than 160 clergy and lay delegates, representing parishes from across the Eastern Diocese, gathered in West Harrison, NY, from May 3 to 5, for the 116th Diocesan Assembly, hosted by the St. Gregory the Enlightener Church of White Plains, NY.
The Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America entered a new era of leadership on Friday, May 4, 2018, when the 116th Diocesan Assembly elected the Very Reverend Fr. Daniel Findikyan as the new Diocesan Primate.
The eagerly anticipated 50th anniversary celebration of St. Vartan Cathedral will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 5 and 6, during a weekend of activities at the Diocesan Center (630 Second Avenue, at 34th Street) in New York City.
On that warm April morning in 1968, when the doors to a newly-built St. Vartan Cathedral swung open to welcome the procession of His Holiness Vasken I, Nazar Nazarian stood shoulder to shoulder with the proud witnesses.
