St. Vartan Cathedral to Begin Major Interior Transformation in September 2026

The Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America is pleased to announce that St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral in New York City will begin the next phase of its transformation in September 2026, with a projected full re-opening in spring 2028.

The project led by the architectural firm Beyer Blinder Belle—renowned for its sensitive historical preservation work and extensive experience with sacred spaces—will include a full restoration of the cathedral’s interior, upgrades to building systems, and enhancements to its event and gathering spaces.

A highlight of the transformation will be the installation of a new pipe organ by the world-class organ construction firm C. B. Fisk. The new organ—to be among the largest in New York City—will establish St. Vartan Cathedral as a landmark for sacred music in the region.

Diocesan Primate Bishop Mesrop Parsamyan reflected on the significance of the project. “St. Vartan Cathedral has been the heart of our community for generations,” he said. “This restoration is an investment in the future—a renewal of the sacred space where our descendants will come to gather in faith.”

During the construction period, Sunday Divine Liturgy (Badarak) services will be relocated to the Chapel of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, located at 325 East 33rd Street (between First and Second Avenues), New York, NY 10016, starting from September 13, 2026, until December 26, 2027. Sunday Divine Liturgy will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., followed by Fellowship Hours from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday School, youth programs, and other parish activities will continue in alternative spaces within the Diocesan complex and nearby locations.

While the cathedral is undergoing its transformation, the Diocese’s administrative, ministerial and professional staff will continue to operate in the Diocesan complex with no significant changes.

Fr. Davit Karamyan, Vicar of St. Vartan Cathedral, expressed his vision for the future. “We have experienced a remarkable renewal in the life of our Diocesan Cathedral in recent years. While this renovation will take us beyond our sanctuary for a time, we are moving forward with faith and optimism, confident that this journey will lead us to a renewed, vibrant home for our growing community when our doors re-open.”

For nearly 60 years, St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral, the first Armenian cathedral built in the Western Hemisphere, has stood as a symbol of faith, resilience, and community. This next chapter in its life will ensure that it continues to inspire future generations—standing renewed at the heart of New York City.

Regular updates on the transformation reopening and reconsecration will be shared with Diocesan leaders and with the public in the months ahead.
