Armenian Church Celebrates Holy Assumption

On Sunday, August 12, Armenian Churches throughout the Eastern Diocese observed the Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother-of-God. Each parish held the “Blessing of Grapes” service after the Divine Liturgy, and proceeded to mark the occasion in their own unique ways.

At New York’s St. Vartan Cathedral, Archbishop Khajag Barsamian celebrated the Divine Liturgy and led the “Blessing of Grapes” service on the cathedral plaza, where worshippers subsequently gathered for a picnic.

In Armenia, at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, the Feast of the Holy Assumption drew large crowds of faithful for one of the most eagerly anticipated holy days of the Armenian Church calendar.

Bishop Arshak Khachatryan celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Mother Cathedral, then led worshippers outside to preside over the Blessing of Grapes ceremony on Etchmiadzin’s large open-air altar.
