H.H. Karekin II Cancels Visit to America in May

Holy Etchmiadzin

The Eastern Diocese has announced that His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, will not be traveling to the United States in early May, as had been scheduled.

His Holiness was expected to preside over the 50th anniversary celebration of St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral in New York, during the weekend of May 5 and 6. (The Catholicos had also planned to preside over an event in Boston later in the week.)

However, on April 27 the Eastern Diocese formally announced to its clergy that Catholicos Karekin II would not be traveling out of Armenia at this time, citing “the continuing situation in the Republic of Armenia.”

The message affirmed that, nevertheless, all of the plans for the cathedral anniversary celebration—which include an exhibit-opening and concert on Saturday, May 5, and a Divine Liturgy on Sunday, May 6—will go forward as planned. For the latter service, Archbishop Khajag Barsamian will be the celebrant.
