2018 Diocesan Assembly to Meet in White Plains, NY

Annual Assembly

The Eastern Diocese is pleased to announce that the 116th Diocesan Assembly will convene May 3-5, 2018. The annual gathering of the Eastern Diocese will meet at the Renaissance Westchester Hotel, West Harrison, NY. The St. Gregory the Enlightener Church of White Plains, NY, will host the assembly, bringing together several hundred Armenian Church leaders from throughout the Eastern Diocese.

Diocesan Primate Archbishop Khajag Barsamian will preside over all the events. This year’s assembly theme, “Under One Roof,” refers to the collaboration of local parishes and ministries under the larger framework of the Diocese.

Prior to the Assembly, clergy from across the Diocese will meet for their annual Clergy Conference and retreat, April 30-May 3. The Diocesan Women’s Guild General Assembly also convenes during the week.

A highlight of the gathering will be the annual awards banquet, on the evening of Friday, May 4. At that time, Toros Mangassarian will be honored as the Diocese’s 2018 “Armenian Church Member of the Year.” Honored as this year’s “Friend of the Armenians” will be Dr. Stephen Smith, executive director of the USC Shoah Foundation.

In addition, a special award will be bestowed on Mr. and Mrs. Nazar and Artemis Nazarian, in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral.

This year’s Diocesan Assembly will lead directly into the Cathedral’s anniversary weekend celebration, presided over by His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, and featuring a concert of sacred music and Pontifical Divine Liturgy. (See details below under Events.) Transportation into Manhattan to attend these events will be arranged for all delegates.

Clergy, Diocesan delegates, and parish council chairs taking part in the 116th Diocesan Assembly will soon receive notification (via mail and e-mail) regarding registration and other details.

Information on the 116th Diocesan Assembly—including online registration and room reservations—will also be available on the St. Gregory the Enlightener parish website. A discounted hotel rate will be available through April 19.
