On Sunday, November 19, St. James Church of Evanston, IL, consecrated a new entry portal for the church during the Divine Liturgy celebrated by Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Diocesan Primate.
The wooden doorway was hand carved in Armenia by master craftsman Aram Vasilyan. In the Armenian Church, the front door of a holy sanctuary holds a special symbolic significance, and must be consecrated by a bishop after installation.
Joy Nazarian, a longtime member of the St. James community, donated the door and a stained glass window above it in memory of her parents, Sarkis and Lucy Nazarian. Badarak was followed by requiem service for the souls of the Nazarians, after which Archbishop Barsamian and the pastor of St. James, Rev. Fr. Hovhan Khoja-Eynatyan, led congregants outside to bless the new doors before fellowship hour.
